Unlike a conventional ICE vehicle, the range and emission levels in EVs depend on their electric powertrain control systems. DDMs enable a simple powertrain for vehicles, which results in maximum efficiency, less wear and tear, less maintenance, and ease of addition of advanced safety features. This, in turn, will increase the return on investments for end-users.

According to Neelam Barua, an industry expert for automotive electronics research, “The ease of installation of DDM systems, even in commercial vehicles, increases the aftermarket opportunity for customization purposes. As the number of vibrating parts decreases with the use of DDM, maintenance costs are reduced, thus, increasing the reliability of the EVs. These DDMs can withstand up to 1 million kilometers without maintenance.”

Economic savings on vehicles

DDMs can propel even a commercial vehicle, leaving space inside the vehicles to accommodate large battery packs, giving an improved range. At the same time, in-wheel motors allow features such as ABS, cruise control, and traction control through software upgrades without adding to the vehicle cost. This allows OEMs to earn money for the additional battery costs as no complex electronic controlling circuits are needed individually for these safety features. The end-user, in turn, will get vehicles with advanced dynamic safety features and improved performance at the same price.

“Another economic advantage is that mechanical components like gearbox, drive shaft, and differential and other ancillary components are eliminated with the use of direct drive in-wheel motors. This results in a simpler vehicle with fewer wearing components, making the construction and designing simpler,” adds Neelam.
