"Great weekend," Sanford said with a smile. "Going into this weekend, we were all anxious. It had been since Seattle since we raced, and it had been since April since we were at this track." But Sanford and her family-owned team performed well from the start in Vegas. She had to pedal her dragster in the first round of qualifying, but it was still a decent pass. "We put in a new motor, so we really didn't know what to expect so to come into this weekend," Sanford said. "Right off the bat with a 5.43 pedaling it, we're like, 'OK, we can work with this.' Even though in the second qualifier we went up in smoke, we knew what not to do, and from there the last three runs we had were consistent. "We've been striving to find that consistency for so long and that we were able to nail that down. Now all it take is doing those fine adjustments and hoping lady luck comes in our lane and not the other guys." Sanford qualified No. 9 with a pass of 5.398 seconds at 268.76 mph, putting her in a first-round matchup against No. 8 qualifier Monty Bugeja. Sanford left first with an .053-second reaction time, and she never trailed, making a winning pass of 5.325 seconds at 268.38 mph, while Bugeja trailed with a run of 5.395 at 264.13 mph. She then faced No. 1 qualifier Garrett Bateman, who ripped to the win light with a 5.279-second pass at 273.66 mph, with Sanford close behind with a 5.363-second pass at 268.81 mph. "We are all so happy," Sanford said. "I'm so proud of my team. They've all been working their butts off to get us here. And even though it wasn't the year we wanted - getting to be at all of the races and do as well as we wanted - I think we are going to wrap it up even better." Sanford has two races this week at Vegas, the divisional postponed by rain from April on Thursday and the regularly schedule divisional race on Friday and Saturday. Plus, Sanford will race in the season-finale at Pomona, Calif. "I know that win will come soon because in just a few days we have our makeup race, so we have one shot there and the day after that we qualify for the next two days for the fall regional event so we have two more shots to get a Wally in Vegas," Sanford said. "And after that, we get to take all of this and take it home to our home track in Pomona, and from there I believe we are going to learn and do so much with the car that we are going to go into Pomona solid.
