Consistent Victory Motorcycle could lead to big day for Matt Smith
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DALLAS - Victory Motorcycles racer Matt Smith brings a consistent Gunner to final
eliminations for the AAA Texas FallNationals on Sunday at Texas Motorplex.
Smith had a bracket bike for the first three qualifying sessions here, with his
best run of 6.879 seconds at 193.46 mph snaring the No. 9 spot. His two other runs
were close behind: 6.886 seconds at 6.887 seconds.
"We were pretty consistent in the first, second and third qualifying passes: .88,
.87, .88. We've got a pretty consistent bike."
Smith was going for more in the final qualifying session, using his tuneup from
earlier this year in Chicago when he qualified No. 1. But, mysteriously, it didn't
work.
"I put my tuneup in from Chicago, loaded that graph straight in the motor, and it
ran really slow," Smith said. "But there were a lot of major changes. So either
we've got some different fuel from back then, what we were running at the beginning
of the year, or I don't know. I've never had that happen. I can always pull a tuneup
out and go fast if it went fast somewhere else."
Smith will return to his original setup for his first-round battle against No. 8
Cory Reed - whose best pass was 6.872 seconds at 192.96 mph.
"We're going to go back to our stuff we were at with the .87/.88 and tweak on it
a little bit and try to get an .86 or .87 out of it," Smith said. "We'll go run
Cory and see if we can beat him first round."
Matt's wife, Victory Motorcycles teammate Angie Smith, failed to qualify for the
race after coming up .025 seconds short of the No. 16 qualifying spot with a bike
she said was "possessed."
"Well, we had wire problems the first two runs and we swapped a motor and started
back at ground zero," Angie Smith said. "With it being a whole new fuel injection
system, we're learning it all over again. It's frustrating.
"Yesterday, the bike missed twice (but) we got that wiring problem fixed. Today,
I had absolutely no data to look at. So we were shooting from the seat of our pants.
I had no clutch, no engine RPM, no nothing - we had no data. It was like tuning
it in 1980, so we did the best we could."
Angie Smith's top pass was 6.986 seconds at 190.11 mph. After the Dallas race, Smith's
bike will be tested at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in hopes of working
out the bugs.
"We are actually going to Vegas and test before Vegas," Smith said. "Matt's going
to ride it. We're going to take all this extra stuff off and we're going to go back
to the old school where it was a Racepak and Morelli system and try and figure it
out. I'm tired and frustrated."
Pro Stock Motorcycle eliminations start at noon, Sunday. FOX Sports 1 will broadcast
all of the elimination action live from 2-5 p.m., Sunday. (All times listed in ET).
