  • Government agencies adopting AWD vehicles
  • Electric off-road racing vehicles gaining popularity

OEMs to focus on technologies that can accommodate toughest terrains

High-performance off-road vehicles are usually subjected to rough terrains and environments and thus the prime focus of manufacturers is to develop technologies that can withstand such environments.

Japanese manufacturer of commercial vehicles Isuzu recently developed the most extreme D-max pick-up truck. Isuzu and Arctic Trucks partnered together to create a capable off-roader in the form of D-max pick-up truck. Isuzu has introduced several key hardware enhancements that ensure great off-road capability with the use of ‘Fox performance’ series shocks that help drivers to gain better mobility even in rugged terrains. The pick-up truck also boasts of wider and higher prolific tires that provide better traction control over uneven surface.

Similarly, other off-road vehicle manufacturers are developing technologies that can make the purpose of off-road vehicles well served. Apart from wider tires, OEMs are working on manufacturing specialized suspension systems with high ground clearance to help off-road vehicles achieve greater approach, departure, and break-over angles. Improvements are also being done at the vehicle body level with manufacturers incorporating tough and durable chassis as the foundation element in the manufacturing of off-road vehicles.

Government agencies adopting all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicle

Officers pursuing suspects had to fight the challenge of keeping their police cars on the road in the last decade. To address such issues, the latest police vehicles now available from Detroit automakers offer precision-tuned engineering that is significantly advanced as compared to cars of 1990s. The difficulty that police officers used to face while maneuvering their vehicles during a suspect chase is now getting better with increased confidence, primarily because of the increased performance of the engine, tuned powertrain, and rugged suspension. Manufacturers have also worked on vehicle’s stability and traction control part so as to keep patrol vehicle on course.

Traditionally, police vehicles that were in operation used to do duty with rear-wheel or front-wheel drive, but this has changed over the past few years. Automakers such as Chrysler, Ford, and GM now offer at least one police vehicle in an all-wheel of four-wheel drive configuration. The trend toward AWD patrol vehicles is gaining popularity as Chrysler and GM now offer their vehicles following initial introduction of the Ford Police interceptor sedan for the Department of Police.

Hence, with the increasing adoption rate of AWD vehicles by police departments of developed countries, the global off-road performance vehicle market would see growth in the years to come.

Electric off-road racing vehicles gaining popularity

Strategic Recovery Institute (SRI) a California-based group is shifting its attention by focusing on sustainable automotive design. The institution has recently developed ‘EV1,’ an electric off-road racer that is capable of delivering 750 lb. ft. of torque at zero rpm with a top speed of 125 mph. The vehicle has some characteristics, which are similar in functionality to one of the world's best electric vehicles Prius in terms of green efficiency. Although E-road racers have been in existence for some time now, off-road manufacturers showed little interest in making electric off-road vehicles till now. However, with the introduction of electric off-road vehicles in the market, the trend may soon be taken up by other off-road manufacturers.

“Looking at the diminishing sources of fuel, and the consequent rise of stringent emission norms and environmental concerns, electrification of off-road vehicles may turn out to be a sustainable solution for off-road vehicle manufacturers in the future,” says Siddharth. Hence, from OEMs’ perspective, the electrification of off-roaders may drive the market in the future.
