Snowmobiles on open water featured this weekend at BIR
Wet & Wild 2.0 is this weekend at BIR
(Sept 20, 2016) - Round 2 of Brainerd International Raceway's Wet & Wild
Weekend is this weekend and features Superbike racing on the road course and
snowmobile racing on open water. It's a crazy weekend of racing at BIR.
The International Watercross Association (IWA) returns to BIR for its final
race of the season. Racers have their sights set on series championships
after this weekend, so the racing will be intense. Watercross racing is
rapidly growing in popularity at BIR because of its unique gravity-defying
nature. Snowmobiles compete in drag racing and oval racing around floating
markers. They start on shore, just a matter of feet from the water¹s edge,
and skip across the water with the riders shifting their weight to turn the
sled. The riders finish the race back on shore.
Do they sink? Of course. After the race is over, a pontoon picks them out of
the water and deposits them back on shore where the sled is typically ready
for the next heat. Racing is Saturday and Sunday.
The Central Roadracing Association (CRA) brings its thrilling brand of
Superbike racing to BIR¹s historic 3.1-mile Donnybrooke Road Course for
it's fifth and final racing weekend of the season at BIR. In addition to
six-lap sprints, the CRA's program includes a five-hour endurance race
Sunday afternoon for its grand finale.
When the CRA raced on the Donnybrooke Road Course in July, Kyle Ohnsorg set
a track record by hitting 197 mph on the mile-long straightaway. His lap
time of 1:39.412 was also a track record.
The CRA will be on the track Friday for practice sessions, followed by
six-lap sprints on Saturday. Sunday's schedule includes practice in the
morning and the five-hour endurance race starting at 11:45 a.m.
Daily admission is $25 and kids 12 and under are free. On-site camping is
free with the purchase of a multi-day ticket.
