CHICAGO, Aug. 24, 2016 -- Cars.com put the current lineup of midsize pickup trucks to the test in its Midsize Pickup Truck Challenge to determine the overall best option for buyers. Contenders included the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado, 2016 GMC Canyon, 2017 Honda Ridgeline, 2016 Nissan Frontier and the 2016 Toyota Tacoma. After extensive testing, the 2016 GMC Canyon has been named the Best Midsize Pickup Truck of 2016.

"Midsize pickups will continue gaining marketplace traction as they keep providing better solutions for buyers looking for an alternative to a full-size pickup or crossover," said Patrick Olsen, Cars.com editor-in-chief. "And the fact that two of the midsize competitors – the Honda Ridgeline and Toyota Tacoma – now have new versions to better compete with GM's popular Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon makes this segment more competitive and desirable than ever."

Testing included head-to-head comparisons in 18 objective categories and resulted in the following ranking:

  1. 2016 GMC Canyon (Plus 2017-1997 Specs, Prices and Reviews)
  2. 2017 Honda Ridgeline (Plus 2017-1997 Specs, Prices and Reviews)
  3. 2016 Chevrolet Colorado(Plus 2017-1997 Specs, Prices and Reviews)
  4. 2016 Toyota Tacoma (Plus 2017-1997 Specs, Prices and Reviews)
  5. 2016 Nissan Frontier(Plus 2017-1997 Specs, Prices and Reviews)

"The Canyon is an all-around great truck," said Olsen. "It is well-balanced and confident both on paved streets and off-road. It's a well-appointed truck on the interior and has some serious ability when it comes to payload and towing as well as overall engine performance."

The Midsize Pickup Truck Challenge was conducted in partnership with PickupTrucks.com, a Cars.com company. For full results of this Challenge, including detailed scoring from each of the 18 test categories, click here or visit www.cars.com/news.
