Gray earned the No. 1 qualifying spot for the 19th annual K&N Filters Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway on Friday evening with a stellar 6.578-second run at 209.46 mph. That was certainly impressive, but Gray and his Gray Motorsports team were just as proud of their 6.587 down the quarter-mile on Saturday afternoon. With atmospheric conditions Saturday similar to what they will be on Sunday, Gray's fourth qualifying run of the weekend was also the quickest of the Pro Stock contingent, and that puts an even bigger smile on the face of the personable driver from North Carolina. "I'm really pleased with the progress we made today," Gray said. "I'm really stoked about racing tomorrow. I think we've got a good shot at it." Gray's No. 1 in Chicago is the sixth of his career. It also marks the first time this season that a race car outside the KB Racing stable has qualified in the No. 1 slot. "Well, I don't want to get too far ahead of myself, but I'd say we've caught up to them at this race," Gray said. "We'll see where we're at with that at a couple of races down the road. "Hats off to everybody involved in Gray Motorsports. My dad (former racer Johnny Gray) has supported us for going on 10 years now. We couldn't do this without him. We couldn't do it without anybody I've got. We have a great core group of guys working on the car. Some of them have been with me for seven years now, so they're all like family. "We're having fun out here. When you have fun, you do well, and we're doing well, so look out." NHRA mandated this season that the Pro Stock class move from carbureted engines to fuel injection, and the learning curve has been more of a challenge for some teams. "I think there are a lot of cars out there that are just as capable of running as fast as KB or as fast as Gray Motorsports," Gray said. "Some of us just haven't turned all the right screws yet, but every race we go to with the fuel injection is different. We'll to Denver (next event) and some of the guys that aren't quite as fast in Chicago may be much better there. "It's harder now than it was before. It's harder to find that right combination. We've stumbled onto that right combination this weekend, but we've been working really hard to stumble onto those small things that add up to what we're seeing in the race car now." Gray will roll to the starting line tomorrow to face No. 16 qualifier Alan Prusiensky in round one. Pro Stock eliminations start at noon, Sunday. FOX Sports 1 will carry qualifying action from 10 p.m. to midnight ET, Saturday, and eliminations live beginning at 2 p.m., Sunday.
