With a spot in the final round on the line, Gray earned an impressive .023-second starting-line advantage against Anderson, a five-time winner this season. The chase was on from there and Gray managed to keep his Valvoline/Nova Services Chevrolet Camaro ahead of Anderson's hot rod through every timer except the one the counts at the finish line, where Anderson stole away the win by six inches. "We gave him a scare," Gray said. "I actually didn't see him at all for a good portion of the race. I felt like I had a great light and I was just so focused on getting through the gears as efficiently as possible. When I finally got into high gear, I allowed a little peek over and just saw a flash of the very front of his car. "I was hoping for the finish line to get there. I promise you it would be impossible to push the gas pedal any harder than I did without breaking it off. It was obviously very close at the stripe and I had to look at the lights on the wall to see who won." The scoreboards showed Anderson to be the winner, with his 6.675 at 208.04 mph just enough to edge Gray's 6.699 at 206.86 mph. After the race, Anderson was quick to thank Gray for waiting on him. When it was their turn to race, Anderson's car had trouble starting and his crew had to take off the entire front end and make some adjustments to get it to fire. Gray graciously waited for him on the starting line. "My dad (former Funny Car and Pro Stock pilot Johnny Gray) taught us all about sportsmanship at a very early age and he's the one that allows us to race to this day, so there was never a thought about leaving Greg back there," Gray said. "It's the gentlemanly thing to do and I have no doubt he would have waited on us had the opposite thing happened. "Hey, hats off to those guys. They've been at another level this year for sure. Having said that, I feel like we are gaining ground and they know it as well. The second half of the year should be a lot of fun." To get his shot at Anderson, Gray dismissed both John Gaydosh and Allen Johnson in Rounds 1 and 2, respectively, with a pair of 6.681 passes. "If we could have run a third 6.68 we would have beaten Anderson, but it warmed up a bit too much and that slowed us down a tick," Gray said. "I'm still very, very pleased with this result. I'm already looking forward to Chicago." The NHRA tour takes a weekend off before heading to Joliet, Ill., on July 8-10 for the Route 66 NHRA Nationals.
