Lucas Oil's Richie Crampton hoping to impress parents visiting from Australia
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NORWALK, Ohio (June 25) -- It's only natural to want to impress your parents, and
for Richie Crampton, the pilot of the Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster, that feeling
is amplified because his parents, Alan and June, have traveled from the other side
of the planet to watch him ply his trade.
Richie, who has more victories (seven) than any NHRA pro born outside of North America,
knows all about the trek from his hometown of Adelaide, South Australia, to the
USA, having done the journey many times in the past. His parents are quickly catching
on to the rigors of the exhausting journey, especially since Richie and his fiancée,
Stephanie Laski, have given Alan and June a granddaughter.
"If all the races were in Los Angeles, it wouldn't be so bad," Alan said. "But when
you fly to Los Angeles, collect all your things, go through customs and immigration,
only to turn right around and check in for another flight to Denver to connect to
Indy, well it's a real hard go of it. Then we barely recovered in time to drive
here to Ohio.
"I'm not complaining though. We love watching Richie race and we're very proud of
him. Everyone back home is proud of him. He's brought so much joy to all of us in
Australia."
Alan actually was on hand for Richie's first win in Englishtown, N.J., in 2014,
and returned to watch him take the trophy in Brainerd, Minn., in 2015, but his mother
stayed in Indy on both of those trips, missing the celebrations.
"Yeah, Mum's never seen me win in person," Richie said. "I'd like to change that
for sure. We're fairly pleased with the car right now and qualifying fourth is
a nice spot for us. We've done better this year, but we've also been in the bottom
half more times than we'd like.
"Aaron (Brooks, crew chief) has made a bunch of changes to the car, including the
chassis itself, and we're starting to see some more consistency. We got a round-win
last Sunday in Bristol and we're hoping to better that tomorrow."
Despite scorching track temperatures both Friday and Saturday, the Lucas Oil team
has run well, opening with a 3.804 at 309.20 mph, followed by its run of record,
a 3.735 at 317.79 mph Friday night under the lights. After finding the limits of
traction in Saturday's first session, Richie returned in the late afternoon to post
a 3.854 at 309.98 mph.
He'll open Sunday's eliminations against Leah Pritchett, who only made one pass
in qualifying, earning the 13th spot with a shutoff 4.309 at 200.17 mph.
"It's good to get down the track, especially in the heat," Richie said. "If we can
stay in that mindset tomorrow, maybe Mum will see her son win a race."
The first two rounds of eliminations will air live on FOX Sports 1 beginning at
noon, Sunday, with a three-hour recap later in the evening, starting at midnight.
Despite scorching track temperatures, Richie Crampton and the Lucas Oil Top Fuel
team have run well, qualifying No. 4 with a 3.735 at 317.79 mph for Sunday eliminations
in Norwalk, Ohio.
