Shane Gray can't parlay lead into second-round win in Bristol

BRISTOL, Tenn. (June 19) -- Valvoline/Nova Services Chevrolet driver Shane Gray
did something few Pro Stock drivers had been able to do in 2016: He was ahead of
Greg Anderson in their second-round race at the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals on
Sunday at Bristol Dragway.
Gray ripped off a stellar .012-second reaction time against the four-time champion
and had a .056-second advantage -- perhaps enough to hold off the dominant KB Racing
team -- but Gray had to push the clutch in down the track, and Anderson sped to
the semifinals.
"Honestly, we just missed the clutch tune-up," Gray said. "We made some changes
before that run, but we just missed the clutch setup a little bit. We learned something
from it, so that's important. We'll put it in the notes and apply it for Norwalk."
Gray's pass was 7.165 seconds at 150.88 mph while Anderson recorded the best run
of the round: 6.668 seconds at 207.56 mph.
"I'd not been real happy with my driving the last couple of races, but today went
pretty well," Gray said. "Chris (McGaha) and Greg -- well, anybody in Pro Stock
can be really good on the Tree, so to get the jump on them both today was good.
I just wish we'd have been able to leg it all the way out against Greg."
Gray also left first in the first round against McGaha with a .021 light, and he
made it hold up with a winning pass of 6.752 seconds at 206.86 mph. McGaha's run
was 6.796 seconds at 205.63 mph.
That round-win helped Gray move to ninth in the Pro Stock points standings, around
Alex Laughlin, one of three drivers using Gray Motorsports engines. Another, Drew
Skillman, raced to the semifinals.
"I was pleased with the way Drew ran, getting to the semifinals," Gray said. "Alex
was kinda like us: He had good speed but didn't make the best run. But all three
teams and crew chiefs are working well together, and we're making progress. We
want to win, of course, but getting better is important and we're doing that."

their second-round race at the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals in Bristol before having
to push in the clutch.
