Misfortune strikes Victory Motorcycles team of Matt and Angie Smith
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 11) -- If the Victory Motorcycles team of Matt and Angie
 Smith didn't have bad luck at the NHRA Summernationals this weekend at Old Bridge
Township Raceway Park, they'd have no luck at all.
Matt Smith, a two-time Pro Stock Motorcycle champion, ran into one problem after
 another in qualifying, including an electrical issue in the final session when
he was on one of the quickest passes of the weekend. Instead, Matt could only scratch
his head after failing to qualify.
Angie Smith's timing was off in Englishtown, as her best pass would have had her
 easily in the field, but because it came on Friday and was outside the top 12,
it didn't carry over to Saturday. Angie was also quick in the final qualifying session,
but because weather conditions were worse Saturday, she wasn't quick enough to get
in the field.
"I got burned by the system," Angie said. "I went a 6.88 and you don't qualify?
I got burned. I shouldn't have been in that position but I was. I'm very disappointed.
"I feel like I ran good this weekend. Today, the weather conditions got way worse,
and I was 11th in the final round out of all the bikes. I went .88 yesterday and
 I'm not in. It's very disappointing."
Angie's best run was 6.888 seconds at 193.21 mph in Q2 on Friday. That put her 14th,
.007-second out of 12th, meaning she had to start over on Saturday.
Her Q4 pass was 6.990 seconds at 189.04 mph, which was 11th-quickest among the 23
bikes, but a much warmer Saturday meant it wasn't enough to make the top 16.
"You have to believe that it can only go up from here," Angie said. "We're all trying
to remain positive. We'll get it."
Matt Smith was unable to make a full pass in any of the four qualifying sessions.
In Q1, the Gunner wouldn't shift and he had to lift. In Q2, batteries were left
out of the bike, and Matt was unable to even attempt a run.
In Q3, on Saturday, Matt's bike again wouldn't shift, but he made a full run, 7.382
seconds at 185.08 mph. In the final session, Matt was ripping the early numbers,
 but after he shifted into fourth gear, the engine mysteriously shut off because
 of an electrical gremlin.
"That was going to be a great run," Matt said. "We had a great 60-foot time, and
 it was going great but then it just cut off. I don't get it. It's really frustrating.
We've got great power, but, man, everything seemed to go wrong this weekend."
Victory Motorcycles riders Matt Smith (above) and Angie Smith (below) ran into several
issues while qualifying at the NHRA Summernationals and will not take part in eliminations
Sunday in Englishtown.
