Shane Gray barges into top 10 during E-town qualifying, looks for more on race day

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 11) -- Back-to-back semifinal finishes over the last two
weekends and a fourth consecutive top-half qualifying effort have pushed Pro Stock
driver Shane Gray into the Mello Yello top 10. Now the Mooresville, N.C.-based oilman
is looking for more, setting his sights on leaving town a lofty seventh overall.
"We skipped a race early in the year to get our program in order and that set us
back a bit in the points, but we're catching up now and it's a good feeling," Gray
said. "Bringing Dave Connolly in to help tune this Valvoline/Nova Services Chevrolet
Camaro alongside Jim Yates and Craig Hankinson has really worked out well. Everyone
gets along well and the focus is on getting all three of our cars better every single
round."
Gray dipped as low as 15th in the rankings after missing the Phoenix event in February
but has methodically knocked off the cars ahead of him ever since. If things go
well this weekend, he could jump all the way up to seventh. He entered this weekend
11th overall but moved up to a tie for ninth by earning extra qualifying points.
"There's a tight little group of us all bunched together from seventh through 11th,"
Gray said. "We started this race at the bottom of that bunch, so the only way to
go is up!
"We're having fun and the mood in the pit has been really good. My parents, Johnny
and Terry, they deserve so much thanks for letting us do this and giving us the
resources to run against the best drivers in the world.
"It's not easy to race at this level. It takes a lot of talent in your crew, it
takes tremendous horsepower, which our guys have been producing, and it costs a
lot of money. The rewards are sometimes few and far between, but when you do climb
the mountain and win one of these races, you definitely know you've accomplished
something."
Gray's best pass of the event was a 6.579 at 211.83 mph, which placed him sixth
on the starting grid. He will open eliminations opposite part-time racer Kenny Delco,
who will be making his fifth start of the season after qualifying 11th with a 6.625
at 209.52 mph.
"We don't take anyone lightly because if you can make the field at one of these
national events, you certainly have the ability to win the race," Gray said. "I'm
sure Kenny will be ready for us and we'll be ready for him.
"It's been a nice trip. New York City is really something. We're staying on until
Thursday to go see the sites. The people have been exceptionally nice to us and
they sure love Pro Stock up this way. It's cool racing here."
FOX Sports 1 will carry Friday and Saturday's qualifying action from 9 to 11 a.m.,
Sunday. Eliminations will air from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., Sunday.
Back-to-back semifinal finishes over the last two weekends and a fourth consecutive
top-half qualifying effort have pushed Pro Stock driver Shane Gray into the Mello
Yello top 10.
