(June 4) -- Shane Gray saved the best for last, and it has him pumped up for the NHRA New England Nationals on Sunday at New England Dragway. Gray's Valvoline/Nova Services Chevrolet Camaro made a pass of 6.605 seconds at 209.59 mph in the final qualifying session Saturday, putting him in the No. 8 spot for final eliminations. However, that pass was fifth-quickest of the session, was run in much warmer temperatures than the previous day, and was within two-hundredths of a second of the quickest cars. "That was a good run," Gray said. "If we can do that four times tomorrow, that would be even better. (Crew chiefs) Dave (Connolly) and Jim (Yates) continue to work well together, and the guys have been working hard all year. The car has been running well the last couple of races, and we need that to continue." Gray will line up against No. 7 qualifier Jeg Coughlin Jr. in the first round of eliminations. Normally, the No. 8 qualifier races the No. 9 racer in the first round, but the 14-car field dictates a different ladder. "Jeg is one of the best in the business, but we'll give it our best shot," Gray said. "I know Jim and Dave will give me a good tune-up, and I'll be ready on the Tree. We'll hope for the best." Coughlin's best pass was 6.599 seconds at 208.65 mph, so the win light may be determined by who leaves the starting line first. "We've struggled a little bit this weekend in qualifying for whatever reason," Gray said. "I don't even know why. We just can't get it all right, but I have faith in my guys to get it right for race day. We'll see what race day brings, and we'll try to make another good one whenever we get to race." When the first round will be held is a question. Weather forecasts for the area call for a 100 percent chance of rain Sunday, but Gray hopes NHRA can get the race in. "I hope we can get the race in tomorrow so everybody can go home and we don't have to spend a lot of money changing flights and hotel rooms and all that," Gray said. "We'll see if we can get it in tomorrow and get to the house on Monday because if we don't, we'll be home on Tuesday and we'll have to turn around and leave to go to Englishtown (N.J.)."
