(June 4) -- Students across the country are about to begin summer vacation as the school year is due to end soon, but school was in session for Richie Crampton and the Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster team during qualifying for the NHRA New England Nationals this weekend at New England Dragway. Now, Crampton will find out if he passes during final eliminations. Crampton qualified No. 11 after some experimentation across the four qualifying sessions. "It's a 13-car show, so we know we're in," Crampton said. "(Crew chief) Aaron (Brooks) did some experimenting with the Lucas Oil car and it showed on the racetrack, but we learned a lot, and we'll file those results away and turn the page on those notebooks." Crampton's best pass came in Q1, when his Morgan Lucas Racing dragster made a run of 4.846 seconds at 308.85 mph. His other qualifying runs resulted in tire smoke as Brooks and the team tried to get more speed out of the car than was possible. Crampton, however, knows race day is a different matter, as the Lucas Oil car has been one of the best at recent races. He reached the semifinals in Topeka, Kan., two weeks ago, so the car is plenty capable of having a long day in eliminations. "The Lucas Oil boys are working hard and keeping their heads up," Crampton said. "They're keeping their heads held high, and I hope we can reward them with some round-wins. "The way the ladder stacks up, the matchups are unconventional because of only having 13 cars. It's going to be a very interesting day, whenever we get to run." The No. 11 qualifier usually races the No. 6 qualifier, but because of the 13-car field, Crampton will race No. 4 qualifier Tony Schumacher, whose best pass was 3.743 seconds at 325.61 mph. But whether that happens Sunday or another day remains to be seen, as the forecast calls for 100 percent chance of rain Sunday. "Tomorrow is going to be a mixed bag with the outlook on the weather," Crampton said. "We hope we can get it in, but it doesn't look promising. How does racing on Monday sound? I'll just look at the weather app and cross my fingers that they're lying, which they did in Houston. We've seen this before."
