(May 21) -- Defending NHRA Kansas Nationals champion Richie Crampton has put himself in good position to repeat. Crampton qualified the Lucas Oil dragster in the No. 4 spot and made four solid passes in qualifying as he tries to repeat as the Top Fuel winner at Heartland Park Topeka. "I think we've got one of the most consistent race cars out here," Crampton said. "Running four good runs like that, each one of them we could've done something a little different to go a little better, but all in all, it was a pretty strong qualifying effort by (crew chief) Aaron (Brooks), (assistant crew chief) Rod (Centorbi), and this entire team." Crampton's best pass was 3.710 seconds at 318.99 mph, but his "worst" run was 3.722 seconds at 324.44 mph, so he clearly has a fast, consistent race car in Topeka. He also earned six bonus points through qualifying, including three for being the quickest in the third qualifying session. "You couldn't wish for any better ammunition to go into race day with," Crampton said. "We're the reigning event champions, and we have one of the most consistent cars in the category and have qualified well. Everything is aligning where it needs to be for us to have a successful Sunday." Crampton starts race day against No. 13 qualifier Terry Haddock, whose best lap was 4.494 seconds at 186.64 mph. "We're not going to take anything for granted," Crampton said. "We know we've got our work cut out for us, but this is a lot better outlook than we've had recently, so it's pretty exciting to know the Lucas team has turned the corner and is kicking butt again." Crampton won at Topeka in 2015, setting the Top Fuel track record in the process. That record has since been broken this weekend, but he would love nothing more than to repeat as race winner and score his first victory of the season. "Having a successful race day is going to make me love this place even more," Crampton said. "The fans have been great, and they remember how well we ran here last year. It's been pretty cool to come back as the reigning champions and hang out with the fans." Eliminations start at 11 a.m., Sunday. FOX Sports 1 will air qualifying from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. ET, Saturday. Elimination action will be broadcast live from 2 to 5 p.m. ET, Sunday.
