Crampton qualified No. 2 and won in the first round of the 36th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals on Sunday at Atlanta Dragway, giving him positive momentum as Atlanta is the start of a seven-week stretch that includes six races. "We've got a lot to build on after this weekend," Crampton said. "We went down five out of the six runs and were competitive, for sure. (Crew chief) Aaron (Brooks) has done a great job of getting us back on track, and the guys have kept plugging away. "We're looking good to carry this new momentum back into a place where we have the track record and won the race the last time we ran there. We're pretty excited about Topeka right now." Crampton is the defending champion of the NHRA Kansas Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka, where NHRA races later this week. In Atlanta, Crampton made a pass of 3.749 seconds at 325.92 mph to dispatch Chris Karamesines and bounce back from a first-round loss in Houston two weeks ago. "To get out of the first round is huge," Crampton said. "First-round losses crush your points implications. We're already keeping an eye on that, so to get out of the first round was huge. We raced 'the Greek,' but he's had our number before, so we weren't taking him lightly. "To make one of the best runs of the session with a 3.749 was also pretty good. We just barely missed out on lane choice for the second round on speed, but it was good to get out of the first round." Crampton then had a good race going in the second round with Shawn Langdon before slowing because of a blower-belt failure in the lights with a pass of 3.822 seconds at 287.90 mph. Langdon pulled out the victory with a run of 3.781 seconds at 324.44 mph. "It stripped all the teeth off the belt somewhere after half-track," Crampton said. "That's why the speed was only 287 through the lights to his 324." Still, Crampton was pleased with the performance of his Morgan Lucas Racing team in Atlanta. "We were obviously looking for more," Crampton said. "But all things considered, it was a very constructive, successful weekend." Today's race will air from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. ET. on FOX Sports 1.
