With a best run of 6.620 seconds at 207.75 mph, Gray enters Sunday's eliminations as the No. 4 qualifier. "We've made a lot of progress in the past week and a half, both in testing and here at Atlanta Dragway," Gray said. "We certainly are closer to where we want to be; not quite all the way there, but closer." Gray recently hired Dave Connolly as crew chief to serve alongside existing crew chiefs Jim Yates and Craig Hankinson, who tune both Gray's Valvoline/Nova Services Chevrolet Camaro and Alex Laughlin's Gas Monkey Garage Chevrolet Camaro. Laughlin's team utilizes Gray Motorsports engines. Connolly, a 26-time winner in Pro Stock, has competed in a variety of classes, most recently in Top Fuel, but the team he raced with folded a few races ago, freeing him up to come help Gray. "Dave is family," Gray said. "He stays at the house whenever he's in Charlotte and my kids even call him 'Uncle Dave.' He's like a brother to me. When Bob Vandergriff shut his team down, Dave found himself without a job, and I knew with the slow start to the season we have had, he'd be a real asset to our crew. "At first he just offered to help where he could, but we made it formal a couple weeks back. I told him he has a home here but at the same time if he receives a job offer to drive another car he should take it, so for now he's on the team and he's obviously making a big impact for us." After opening with a 6.661 at 207.08 mph Friday afternoon, Gray made his run of record in the slightly cooler evening session on Day 1. He still looked sharp Saturday, posting a 6.681 at 208.04 mph and a 6.651 at 207.98 mph, but increased track temperatures kept him from improving on his Friday night run. "We got down the track every time and we were up near the top of the timing sheets each run, so we have a consistently quick race car," Gray said. "If we execute like this tomorrow and the driver does his job, we should be able to contend for the trophy. At the very least we'd like to turn on a couple of win lights." Gray opens elimination action at noon ET against No. 11 qualifier Kenny Delco, who had a best run of 6.714 at 205.85 mph. FOX Sports 1 will air Saturday qualifying from 10 to 11 p.m. ET and Sunday's elimination action from 4:40 to 7:30 p.m. ET.
