*The 2016 season at Franklin County Speedway is about to heat up and not
just because of the temperatures rising. The Fastest 3/8 mile paved oval in
the world will see action on four days over the next three weeks beginning
with Sunday afternoon's Hometown Throwdown.*
The drivers have had a month off from points racing competition but that's
about to change. The Hometown Throwdown will be the first of three weekends
of competition culminating with a two-day Memorial Day weekend event which
will feature a U-Car Dash4Cash paying $2,000 in winners purse over the two
days.
First the Hometown Throwdown will bring everyone back to the track for what
is anticipated to be one of the biggest fields of Late Models of the young
season. Devin Steele will be looking to repeat from his season opening
victory but many drivers are hungry to get to victory lane including former
track champions Wesley Thomason and Kyle Dudley. Both drivers had issues in
the season opener and weren't able to challenge for the win.
Steele, Thomason and Dudley will have their hands full though as Bobby
Gillespie, who lead most of the season opener before contact ended his day,
has a new car and he's looking to get back to victory lane for the first
time since 2012. Other contenders from race one looking to better their
finishing positions are Joey Phillips, who ended up third in the season
opener and Jonathan Hall who in his first full race in a Late Model led
just past the middle portion of the event and finished fourth.
Wayne Roach, Jr. who qualified on the pole for the season opener by over
three tenths of a second will be looking for redemption after getting
involved in a mid-race crash and fracturing his wrist. Ricky Gillespie and
Josh Leedy will also be looking to improve on their performances from the
season opener and Kevin Parker who was unable to start the first race due
to engine troubles is hoping to make it on to the grid Sunday afternoon.
Those ten drivers from the first race will have to fend off the challenges
of some drivers who weren't ready to start the season in April. Most
notably Mike Looney will be returning to competition behind the wheel of
Billy Martin's famous #87 car. Looney looked dialed in during a test
session last weekend and hopes to put his car back in victory lane on
Sunday. Other drivers expected to return this weekend include; Kelly
Kingery, Nathan Wheat, Daryn Cockram, Ryan Collins and Calvin Brooks.
AJ Sanders will be looking to keep his points lead alive in the Mini Stock
division over his brother-in-law Barry Wilson who finished second to him in
the season opener. Those two boys will however have to be ready to fend off
the challenges of former track champion Brittany Cockram who is looking to
make up ground after missing the season opener.
She already has a win to her credit on a non-points event a few weeks ago
and she'll be looking to get her first points victory of the season. Cole
Martin, Jonathan Simacek, Wayne Gillespie and Daniel Hutson will all be
looking for their first victories of the season. Paul Caldwell is also
expected to hit the track for the first time this season.
Robert Gibson and Buck Mitchell are looking to return in the Mini Cup
division this weekend and spoil the party up front for Brett Suggs who
dominated the season opener. Jeff Davis will also be looking to get back on
track after engine woes held him back in the opener. Jeff Stump broke a
chain in the season opener but after a second place finish in the Virginia
Mini Cups this past weekend at Dominion Raceway, he'll be looking for his
first win of the season on Sunday.
Jason Quintrell finished second in the season opener but after a strong run
at Shenandoah a couple of weeks ago he's wanting to get his car back in
victory lane as well. Jacob Steele will be looking for his first win of the
season as well after a solid run in the season opener. He and his team have
been working to improve their program for the rest of the season. Many
other Mini Cups are expected to be coming to race over the next couple of
weeks as more and more drivers get the itch to race again.
Chad Ricker will be looking to get back on top of the U-Car division after
breaking a transmission in the non-points $500 to win feature on April
24th. Ricker won the season opener and leads the points standings currently
over North Carolina invader Larry Isley Jr. Isley scored the win in the
$500 U-Car event but now he has his sights set on getting a win in a points
race and challenging Ricker for the championship.
WJ Altizer had a heartbreaking defeat in the $500 U-Car race to end the
month of April after leading 41 of 50 laps and finishing second. Altizer
looks for his first win in over a year but he'll have to fend off
challengers like JR Heath, Jason Janney, Steve Toombs, Travis Warnick,
Mikey Reed, Patrick Janney and Jessica Cockram plus a host of newcomers to
the division including Brandon Radford, Rodney Howell, Ronnie Riggs,
Derrick Radford and Brian Thornhill who competed in the $500 to win event
but have yet to run a points race.
Michael Simacek will look to stay hot in the Tunerz division after his win
to open the season back on April 17th. Simacek will have his hands full
though as the Amos boys Chris and Andrew look to dethrone him as well as
another former track champion JC Morgan. Several new cars are being built
for this division as well and Kevin Boose Jr. looks to make his first start
of the season as well after having mechanical issues during the first event.
Jason Warsing will have to fend off the challenges of some guys who weren't
at the first Street Stock race including Danny Bush who broke in practice
the day before the season opener. Bush will be looking to get his first win
as well as Eddie Rocke and EL Webb. Danny Wickham is also hoping to have
his car ready to go after radiator problems sidelined them from the first
race.
The Future Stars Mini Cups will fire up for their second race of the season
with Jay Quintrell looking to stay hot after winning the first race of the
season. However Abby Altice will be looking to get her car in victory lane
as well. Ashley Coon grabbed a podium finish in the season opener and she
too is looking for her first win in the Future Stars Mini Cup class. Ethan
Heath and Aaron Quintrell will both be looking to improve on their fourth
and fifth place finishes in the season opener but there will likely be new
challengers coming to give them a run for their money this Sunday.
