The North American International Auto Show is once again taking over the Motor City and like its trademark Motown artists, the hits just keep coming. Established acts and new comers alike are vying for the attention of the assembled worldwide press contingent.

While the press previews officially began on Monday January11, the events that preceded the show are equally impressive and worthy of recognition. The top of this list is the MAIN (Motorcity Auto Industry Night) Event 2016.

This annual event is held at Max Fisher performing arts center, which is the home of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, but on one magical night this spectacular venue is transformed into a showcase of automotive design talent and believe me the talent pool in this area is broad and deep.

Industrial design is not a sexy term and frankly it is a field that does not get the recognition it deserves, but the Main Event is working to change that perception by showcasing the work design students are creating both here in Detroit and from around the world.

When you stop and consider that every product, device or vehicle has in some way or another been touched by an industrial designer you start to appreciate the scope of this discipline and its impact on our everyday lives.

The MAIN Event is the brain child of Mr. Keith Nagara who is also the Director of Transportation Design and Industrial Design at Lawrence Technological University, whose campus is located in the Detroit suburb of South field. Joined by a revolving list of corporate sponsors, this year headlined by the Ford Motor Company, INTEVA Products, Pure Michigan and Polaris, the event has grown in size, scope and the its success has enlarged the pool of funds available to present scholarships to worthy students.

If the recognition and scholarships each winner receives is not enough of a reward, the event also offers a great stage and the opportunity for networking and socializing with other attendees who are a mix of students, faculty members and creative professionals.

In addition to recognizing the work of those just starting in this field, the MAIN Event also recognizes industry leaders who have championed the cause and who serve as inspiration. This year’s winner was Peter Schreyer, President and Chief Design Officer for Hyundai Motor Group, past winners of the global industry executive of year have included Carlos Ghosn, Mark Fields, Elon Musk and Bob Lutz.

The 2016 Industry Innovator Of The Year award was presented to Daniel Simon, previous award recipients are Peter Horbury, Moray Callum, Ian Callum, and Klaus Busse.

The Auto channel will be conducting a new three part feature on the field of design, so be sure to check back and learn more about this growing and important field.
