This new episode explores the Volkswagen diesel emissions scandal,
what it means for the company, for the industry as a whole, for consumers
and for the government. One of the world’s largest automakers,
pledged to be the largest in just a few years, takes a huge hit that will
certainly set it back substantially after admitting to blatantly cheating
on diesel emissions testing. We are fortunate to have some of the
automotive journalism community’s top pundits to help clarify
what’s going on. And we talk to a representative from one of the
companies that makes testing equipment..
Segments 1 & 2: Most car enthusiasts will know Csaba Csere as the
longest serving editor-in-chief at Car & Driver Magazine and regular auto
industry pundit on CBS News. Trained as an engineer he quickly found his
way into automotive journalism rising to the top of his field. Csaba helps
us understand what the scandal is all about. We talk about diesels in the
U.S.
Segment 3: Another well-informed media pal, former editor of
Automotive Industries Magazine, who hosts his own TV show called AutoLine,
is John McElroy. John offers a lively discussion of what this means to the
consumer. What will VW do to compensate owners for loss of value and
repairs? What will happen around recalls? How might consumers react? John
has a practical and interesting take on the whole issue.
Segments 4 & 5: Doron Levin of Fortune and TheStreet.com has a radio
program called The Driver’s Seat on XM Satellite Radio 121. He is
both a business and auto industry expert. We talk about what this scandal
may do the the company and its people as well as its customers. He also
clarifies some of the emissions issues and how the “defeat
device” circumvented testing.
Segment 6: Finally, Jeremy Burne, business development manager for
Global MRV talks about some of the testing equipment his company makes and
how that equipment is used in the real world. Global MRV has just
introduced a product called Firefly, a small, relatively inexpensive,
on-board testing unit that tests real-time, on-the-road emissions. That
technology could have application in future testing.
