SINDELFINGEN -- Oct. 8, 2015: The title says it
all: "Daimler Design – Unexpected Moments" is the name of the
exhibition which will be on show at the municipal gallery in Sindelfingen
from 11 October 2015. The exhibition provides insights into the diverse
spectrum of work in the field of design - from smart through Mercedes-Benz
cars to the large commercial vehicles and the lifestyle products. The
exhibition forming part of the "Kooperation WerkStadt" series offers a
journey of discovery through vehicle design and has a variety of new ideas
and surprises in store. Film evenings, talks and workshops round off the
programme.
In this year marking
the 100-year anniversary of the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen and the
25-year anniversary of the municipal gallery in Sindelfingen, the
exhibition spanning precisely 100 days will present both historical and
present-day items from the field of Daimler design in the form of sketches
and models. Rather than being structured along strictly chronological
lines, the exhibition mixes design topics from diverse eras. Historical
design models present design milestones, while visitors will also be
granted insights into the design philosophy, the processes involved and the
designers' visions for the future.
"The
exhibition brings our design philosophy of Sensual Purity to life," notes
Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG. "As an expression of luxury
in a modern guise, this offers timeless design combining emotion and
coolness."
"In this anniversary year, it
provides a great opportunity to present the subject of design just outside
the factory gates for the first time," enthuses Markus Schäfer, Member of
the Divisional Board Mercedes-Benz Cars, Manufacturing and Supply Chain
Management. "We have been growing continually here since 1915 – just
like the town of Sindelfingen itself. In our anniversary year we are
presenting a particularly interesting exhibition of our own which is aimed
both at the general public and our workforce. For me, the design of our
vehicles forms part of the 'Mercedes Legend', making it a crucial element
of our company's traditions and history."
"For almost 130 years now, Daimler has stood for
fascinating and unique design. The exhibition affords exclusive insights
into our designers' work and offers visitors a gripping journey through
different eras, also taking in revolutionary visions for the future,"
explains Prof. Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Daimler Board of Management
responsible for Group Research and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars
Development.
A varied programme: film
evenings, talks and workshops
A varied
programme is on offer for visitors during the hundred-day exhibition to
close the anniversary year: Designers such as Prof. h.c. Klaus Frenzel,
Head of Digital Graphic & Corporate Design, Daimler AG, will describe
their work. Alexander Mankowsky, futurologist, and Sabine Engelhardt,
olfactoric expert, both from Daimler AG, will present talks offering a look
over their shoulders. For film enthusiasts there will be an opportunity to
experience "Metropolis" in a live performance by Antonio Bras, while
"Tron", the classic from 1982, will serve up some thrilling special
effects. Workshops will offer children and young people an opportunity to
create their own vehicles with Fimo modelling compound or the special
adhesive tape used by designers.
"'Daimler Design – Unexpected Moments' will be the
exhibition highlight of the year at our gallery - for design enthusiasts,
car fans and a whole spectrum of other visitors from near and far," says
the town's mayor, Dr. Bernd Vöhringer. "We are delighted at Daimler's
involvement in Sindelfingen - as yet another example of the partnership
which has been fostering the dialogue between Daimler and the town for many
years now as part of the 'WerkStadt' cooperation programme."
The WerkStadt programme offered a special project this
year, in which pupils from the Product Design department at
Gottlieb-Daimler-Schule II produced works of their own focusing on
vehicles, with guidance from Holger Hutzenlaub, Head of Advanced Design in
Germany, Daimler AG. They will be presenting the results of their work in
the gallery's Oberlichtsaal during the Long Night of Museums on 14
November, beginning at 7 p.m.
The
exhibition will be open for visitors to Sindelfingen's municipal gallery
(Marktplatz 1, 71063 Sindelfingen) until 18 January 2016, from 10
a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at weekends and on
