Alex Chinneck and Vauxhall Motors reveal behind-the-scenes footage to ‘Pick yourself up and pull yourself together’

LUTON, UK -- February 23, 2015: Today, a film revealing the illusion of how Alex Chinneck parked a Vauxhall Corsa upside down and 15ft in the air near the Southbank has been released.

Vauxhall Motors worked with Alex Chinneck and documentary director Chris Tubbs to create both a behind-the-scenes film, offering insights into how the project developed and a time-lapse of the piece’s installation.

The film is an in depth, access all areas look at how the illusion was created. The short documentary charts the conception of the idea, Alex’s studio, visits to the Vauxhall Technical Centre and the steel fabricators as well as the intricate work by the scenic artist team to bring the art installation alive in the shadow of the London Eye.

After launching last week, ‘Alex Chinneck for Vauxhall Motors: Pick yourself up and pull yourself together’ has been gaining attention across the globe with thousands of people flocking to the Hungerford Car Park at the Southbank Centre and social media buzzing of ‘upside down cars’.

The collaboration with Vauxhall Motors turns a parking space on its head, peeling back 15 metres of arching tarmac to turn a one tonne car upside-down as the vehicle grips the curling road.

As well as Alex himself, the sculpture has been produced by a team of structural engineers, steel benders, scenic artists, metal workers, carpenters, tarmac layers and road painters, creating an object that was designed to occupy the absolute maximum UK road-legal dimensions so it can be installed overnight.

‘Alex Chinneck for Vauxhall Motors: Pick yourself up and pull yourself together’ is currently running until Wednesday 25th February at the Southbank Centre Car Park.
