Holiday Weekend Crashes Investigated by Pennsylvania State Police

HARRISBURG, PA--Dec. 2, 2013: Over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday driving period, the Pennsylvania State Police investigated 936 crashes. Nine people were killed and 236 others were injured. This total does not include crashes investigated by local police.

The official holiday driving period was Nov. 27 through Dec. 1. During that time, troopers cited 1,202 individuals for not wearing seat belts and issued citations to 104 motorists for not securing children in safety seats.

Troopers also issued 7,446 speeding citations and arrested 433 operators for driving under the influence. Of the 936 crashes investigated by State Police, 74 of those crashes, including one fatal crash, were alcohol related.

Last year, 13 people died and 349 others were injured in 1,124 crashes to which state troopers responded.

The statistics cover only those crashes investigated by state police and do not include statistics on incidents to which other law enforcement agencies in Pennsylvania responded.
