Head of Consumer Electronics Association Signs On to the It Can Wait Movement to End Texting While Driving

ARLINGTON, Va.-July 20, 2013: The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) announced today that its President and CEO, Gary Shapiro, has signed a pledge to support the It Can Wait campaign to end texting and driving.

“As a leader in the technology industry, I call on my peers to join in this important effort to help make America's roadways safer.”

"Putting an end to texting and driving begins with the conscious choice by the person behind the wheel to put the phone down. By signing this pledge, I have made a personal commitment not to text and drive, and to use my devices responsibly while operating my car," Shapiro said. "As a leader in the technology industry, I call on my peers to join in this important effort to help make America's roadways safer."

Shapiro's pledge is a natural extension of CEA's work on the distracted driving issue. The association has actively supported commonsense measures like state legislation banning texting while driving and placing strict limits on the use of electronics by novice drivers. In addition, CEA recently convened a working group to develop industry standards and best practices for designing consumer electronics products to help maximize driver safety. CEA also is in the process of developing a public education campaign focused on the wide variety of technology solutions available on the market today for consumers to help address distracted driving.

The 2013 It Can Wait campaign will culminate on September 19, with a national day of action against distracted driving, featuring activities throughout the country by those supporting the program.

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) is the preeminent trade association promoting growth in the $209 billion U.S. consumer electronics industry. More than 2,000 companies enjoy the benefits of CEA membership, including legislative advocacy, market research, technical training and education, industry promotion, standards development and the fostering of business and strategic relationships. CEA also owns and produces the International CES -- The Global Stage for Innovation. All profits from CES are reinvested into CEA's industry services.
