'911 Memorial' Fire Engine to Star in Shannons EKKA Display
BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA – July 15, 2013: A spectacular relica 1911 Ford Model T Fire Chiefs Truck that was restored for the New York 911 memorial to honour the firemen who died in the 2001 Twin Towers disaster, will take pride of place in the special Shannons Classic and Vintage car display at this year’s EKKA in Brisbane.
Based on the chassis of a 1919 Model T Fire Chief’s car purchased in Ohio, the car was reconfigured as a 1911 model because authentic parts from that model were more readily available.
The vehicle is stunning with its torch red bodywork with black mudguards and hand-applied 23 Karat Italian Gold Leaf and pin-striping – just as it would have been originally.
Its fire fighting equipment is also correct for the era, from its restored Sterling hand crank siren, to its twin copper Badger fire extinguishers with beautifully polished brass bases and restored Fire King Fire Department Lantern with red globe and brass bracket.
The only item that could not be located for the recreation was a period Copper Chemical Tank. In its place is a very rare five gallon soda tank that is very similar in appearance to the original.
After being used as a promotional vehicle in the United States, the unique ‘911 Memorial’ fire engine is now owned by a Queensland-based Shannons customer, who has lent it for display at EKKA.
Other special vehicles in the Shannons display at EKKA include a stately 1928 Oakland All-American Six Tourer, a plush 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback with a special Lime Gold luxury interior, a special 1973 Bultaco Pursang 350cc Vintage Motocross bike (made popular by the MX movie ‘On Any Sunday’) and of course the public’s favourite, the Shannons 1959 Goggomobil Dart.
The A-Code Mustang 289 V8 Auto was ordered with ‘interior and exterior Decor group’ that included its centre console, roof console, frosted aluminium dash and door trims and two-tone luxury interior. It has recently been restored to its ex-factory colour scheme.
EKKA runs from August 8-17 at the Brisbane Exhibition Ground, Bowen Hills. The Shannons display will be located in the foyer of the new Royal International Convention Building.
