LOS ANGELES--June 7, 2013: As you plan your summer vacation, the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health reminds you to be prepared in case disaster strikes while you're away. This information is provided as part of the new Los Angeles County Community Disaster Resilience (LACCDR) Project.

The project emphasizes getting to know your neighbors so you can plan with them for emergencies. Research has shown communities that know each other and prepare together survive better during emergencies and recover more quickly afterward.

Here are the top ten things you should do to ensure your family and your home are ready should an emergency or disaster happen while you're on vacation:

  • Provide friends or relatives and a trusted neighbor with your travel itinerary, copies of your identification and contact information.
  • Ask someone to check your house or apartment while you are away. Make arrangements to have your mail and newspaper delivery suspended, and alternate lights switched on and off so your home looks occupied in your absence.
  • If possible, travel with a small first aid kit, a small battery-operated radio and flashlight. Also pack an extra supply of critical items such as medications and baby formula.
  • Pack additional clothing in case of unexpected rain, heat or cold.
  • In case of emergency, or if your wallet is stolen, have a list of your credit card and health insurance information, your doctor's phone number, and medications. Keep copies of your passport and driver's license.
  • If traveling abroad, research and carry contact information for the nearest American Embassy or Consulate. Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) through the U.S State Department to receive travel warnings and alerts, and assistance during a natural disaster.
  • During your trip, check-in with friends and family periodically to let them know where you are.
  • Before setting off for the day, check the weather forecast along your route.
  • If an emergency or disaster occurs during your trip, register with the American Red Cross' Safe and Well website so friends and relatives can find you.
  • Always familiarize yourself with the emergency plan and exits of your lodging - hotel, campground, motel etc.
