GEICO Honda pro Tomac starts outdoor season with podium finish in Hangtown

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (May 18) - The GEICO Honda team kicked off the 2013 AMA Pro Motocross
season by putting two riders in the top five at Saturday's Red Bull Hangtown Motocross
Classic.
Eli Tomac finished third overall in the 250cc class, with teammate Zach Osborne
fifth. GEICO Honda riders Justin Bogle and Zach Bell didn't have the same kind of
luck, as Bogle ended up 12th and Bell 20th in the motocross opener.
Tomac, who finished third in the 250 points standings last year, finished second
in the first moto and third in the second to claim third overall.
"It was good. I haven't been on the podium here in over three years, so it's good
to get third, at least," Tomac said. "We went 2-3 in the motos, so I can't complain.
For the first race of the year, you have to figure out where you are speed-wise
with the pace. I feel like I'm in a good spot to start the season."
Tomac finished a close second in the 250 West Supercross standings and was anxious
to start clean and race outdoors again.
"It's always fun to get back outdoors, open up that throttle and go for a little
bit longer and have some good battling," Tomac said.
Osborne also was ready for the outdoor season, especially since he hasn't ridden
in a national motocross race for five years. He was ninth in the first moto, and
after a collision with another rider in the second moto temporarily forced him outside
the top 10, he rallied to finish fifth.
"It's a good way to start the season," Osborne said. "It's something to build on.
I actually kind of surprised myself today. This is the first national I've ridden
in five years and I didn't know what to expect, really. To come away with a fifth
overall is really good and that feeling will carry us into Lakewood, another track
I really like."
Bogle missed the Supercross season with a broken wrist so he admits being excited
to race for the first time since the motocross finale last year.
But things didn't exactly go as planned as he tangled with another rider on the
first lap of the first moto and went down. Halfway through that race, he fell again
and ended up 19th. Bogle rode better in the second moto with an eight-place finish,
but he wanted more.
"This is not really at all where I want to be at," Bogle said. "The second moto,
I got a better start from my gate pick. I rode pretty well for parts of the race,
but there were parts of the race where I didn't ride well at all. All in all, not
what I wanted."
Bell was also returning from an injury, this one a shoulder problem suffered during
the Supercross season. He finished 15th in the first moto but pulled off the track
late in the second because of pain in his shoulder.
"The first moto was bad because we lost the front brake," Bell said. "I got the
holeshot in the second moto, but my shoulder felt weak, and I couldn't hang on.
I wish I was faster and up front with those guys. I felt good about the holeshot
though."
Bell said he would get his shoulder re-examined when he returned home and wasn't
sure if he would be physically able to race in the next event, the Thunder Valley
National on May 25 in Lakewood, Colo.
