(May 18) - One of the first-round matchups of the NHRA Kansas Nationals on Sunday at Heartland Park Topeka features two veteran drivers who are among the best on the Christmas tree, and MAVTV racer Greg Stanfield is hoping he's the one who advances to the second round. Stanfield, who qualified No. 13, will face four-time Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. in Sunday's first round. "It'll be a good race," Stanfield said. "We just need him to be late. Maybe he'll stay out late tonight." Stanfield came into Saturday's final two qualifying sessions outside the top 12 and needed a good pass to make it into Sunday's race. He got it in Q3, running a lap of 6.699 seconds at 205.98 mph to secure the No. 13 qualifying spot. Coughlin, meanwhile, had a top pass of 6.633 at 208.46 mph when Friday's weather and track conditions were better. "I've got to go up there and bust Jeg," Stanfield said. "That's the plan. We're going to try to be perfect tomorrow. He knows that though." Stanfield, 10th in the Pro Stock points standings, has secured first-round holeshot victories in the last two races, beating Mike Edwards in Houston and Allen Johnson in Atlanta. He may need another good start against Coughlin because Stanfield and his two-man crew have struggled with changing conditions at Heartland Park. "The tune-up, ratio, we're trying to figure it out," Stanfield said. "The first run this morning, the .69, was decent. We made some changes but went the wrong way for the last run. We'll go back the other way for tomorrow and see if we can't sneak a .68 out of it. That will get us a little closer." Stanfield's pass in Q4 was a 6.724 at 205.98 mph, and his best run of the weekend was a 6.672 at 206.54 mph, but that was in Q2 on Friday before those drivers outside the top 12 had their elapsed times wiped out. Still, Stanfield is confident he and his team can get the job done on Sunday. "We'll be OK," Stanfield said. "We might surprise them tomorrow." Eliminations for Sunday's NHRA Kansas Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka will get under way at 11 a.m. CDT.
