Bernstein started the weekend on Friday afternoon with a 3.828 pass at 324.90 mph, which was the best of that session, and he ultimately improved to a 3.819 at 321.27 mph to start Sunday's eliminations out of the No. 10 spot. "We've got a pretty good idea of what the track will hold," Bernstein said. "Tomorrow will be just a matter of what conditions will be out there. We've already seen sun, wind, and cloudy conditions. The track is good but (crew chief) Joe Barlam is going to have some tough calls to make tomorrow. "There are some numbers to be had out there and the ProtectTheHarvest.com team is ready." Bernstein will pair up in the first round against No. 7 qualifier Clay Millican, who recorded a best lap of 3.811 at 321.12 mph. "We've got a good hot-weather setup," Bernstein said. "We'll go from there and deal with whatever comes. The team has a lot of momentum from last week's trip to the final round, and we'd like to repeat that performance." The PortectTheHarvest.com team is seventh in the Top Fuel standings going into Sunday's eliminations, five points behind sixth-place Khalid alBalooshi. Bernstein has been dealing with a herniated disc in his lower back for the bulk of the last couple of weeks. The disc is pressing on a nerve that causes sharp pain into his leg and foot. He said he is going to take full advantage of the 16 or so hours from the end of qualifying Saturday to the start of eliminations Sunday to get himself in the best situation possible. "It's been weird because my foot has been painful all weekend," Bernstein said. "With that going on, every hour of extra time I get to relax and reduce pressure on that nerve is great. It's good I'll be able to get it calmed down a little bit because it seems to get worse after every run." Eliminations for Sunday's NHRA Kansas Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka will get under way at 11 a.m. CDT.
