Honda Sustainability Award For 'The Backyard Room'

TULLAMARINE, UNITED KINGDOM – Marc 25,2013: Mr. Daniel Tyrrell of Daniel Tyrrell Landscapes has received the Honda Sustainability Award at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show Garden Design Awards.

As part of his prize, Mr. Tyrrell was also given the use of a new Honda Civic Hybrid for twelve months.

Honda Australia Director and General Manager Sales and Marketing, Mr. Stephen Collins said ‘The Backyard Room’ concept was innovative, met all the competition criteria and visually captured the imagination. “After meeting Mr. Tyrrell and hearing about his commitment to sustainability and the environment I am confident our Civic Hybrid will be in good hands,” Mr. Collins said.

The award was presented by the Victorian Premier, The Hon Dr. Denis Napthine, along with Honda Australia’s Managing Director and CEO, Mr. Satoshi Matsuzawa and Mr. Collins.

The Honda Sustainability Award recognised the exhibit that displayed best practice as well as planting style and equipment that incorporated sustainable gardening practices and principles. Using key selection criteria, the judging panel found Mr. Tyrrell’s design to be the most sustainable of the 23 entries.

“The concept of ‘The Backyard Room’ is a meadow-inspired, naturalistic and modern garden, designed to be low maintenance. The plants used are drought-hardy perennials which self-seed and colonise. There is a new wave of interest in gardens such as this and I’m happy to have the award recognition,” Mr. Tyrrell said.

Marking the first day of the five-day event, the Garden Show Design Awards recognise excellence across landscaping and floral design and is the biggest and most significant award ceremony for the garden industry in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Melbourne International Flower and Garden show officially opened this morning and will run until Sunday, 24 March in the Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens.
