Lincoln University supporters rally to help their school beat out other HBCUs for a $50,000 donation for scholarships

JEFFERSON CITY, MO--March 8, 2013:  Allstate, the Tom Joyner Foundation and alumni, students and supporters of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the country raised more than $141,000 in scholarship funds as part of the 2012 Allstate Quotes for Education program.

Lincoln University won the first-ever Quotes for Education fan vote and will receive an additional $50,000 donation from Allstate for scholarships at their school.

For every person who received an insurance quote from an Allstate agent and mentioned Quotes for Education between August 1 and December 31, 2012, Allstate donated $10. These funds have been donated to the Tom Joyner Foundation and earmarked to provide scholarships for students attending HBCUs.

"We were amazed at the response the Quotes for Education program received this year," said Cheryl Harris, senior vice president at Allstate. "Thanks to the thousands of passionate fans who participated in the program, together, we will be able to support students attending HBCUs and help them attain their dream of graduating from college."

Lincoln University supporters employed social media tools as well as word-of-mouth networking to successfully engage alumni, students, faculty and staff in the fan vote campaign.

"Our alumni were excited about the chance to raise scholarship funds by representing the Blue Tigers in the Allstate Quotes for Education fan vote," said Dr. Connie Hamacher, interim president of Lincoln University. "Everyone in the Lincoln family pitched in to help us win this donation, and we would like to extend a special thanks to Allstate and the Tom Joyner Foundation for supporting HBCUs and providing this opportunity."

This marks the second year that Allstate has partnered with the Tom Joyner Foundation for the Quotes for Education program. Additionally, for the past nine years, Allstate has title-sponsored the Allstate Tom Joyner Family Reunion. Both programs are part of Allstate's year-round commitment to create, support and sponsor programs that empower the African-American community.

"I'm so proud of all the students, alumni and other supporters who turned out to support Lincoln," said Tom Joyner, chairman of his Foundation and host of the nation's top ranked nationally syndicated morning radio show. "I'm also grateful for Allstate for sharing my passion for HBCUs. The Quotes for Education program goes a long way to make a difference in these students' lives. They're getting a chance to complete their education - and pursue their dreams."

A 2009 study by the non-profit research group Public Agenda found that most young adults who started but did not complete higher education cited the need to work more as a major reason that forced them to drop out of school.
