Small Volkswagen up! Claims Big Award Up In Scotland
MILTON KEYNES, UNITED KINGDOM – Oct 15, 2012: Volkswagen’s city car, the up!, which went on sale in the UK in January and has since won a string of accolades, has added a new title to its name after winning the Compact category at the 2012 Scottish Car of the Year awards. The award was presented at a ceremony held in Glasgow on Friday 12 October.
Commenting on the up!’s performance, John Murdoch, President of the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers, said: ‘Small cars are big news in 2012. It made our judges’ decision process harder than ever, especially when there are so many strong contenders for the title of best compact car. Our winner may be small on the outside, but it’s big on the inside and just as big on quality, class and comfort.’
The awards are judged by all 15 members of the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers, who represent publications and websites from across the country.
Volkswagen’s Area Manager, David Jackson, collected the award on behalf of the company, and added: ‘We’re delighted with this award and grateful to the Association for giving it to the up!. Since the car’s launch it’s had a fantastic response from customers in Scotland and it’s a key retail car for our network up here north of the border. The car has picked up a number of awards since launch but to gain the seal of approval from the Scots is the icing on the cake.’
Since launch, the up! has been named overall What Car? Car of the Year and World Car of the Year, as well as taking city car titles from publications including Fleet World and CarBuyer.
The up! is a completely new design from Volkswagen which offers maximum space on a minimal footprint. Prices for the entry-level Take up! start at just £7,995. Both three- and five-door models are now available, along with two petrol engines and BlueMotion Technology variants for added economy and environmental benefits.
