Porsche Boxster Voted Best Convertible In Scotland
READING, UNITED KINGDOM – Oct 15, 2012: Home to some of the best roads in the British Isles, you would expect motoring writers from Scotland to know a thing or two about driving. This theory was tonight proven when the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers voted the new Porsche Boxster its favourite convertible sports car in the 2012 Scottish Car of the Year Awards at its annual black-tie event in Glasgow.
With an all-new lightweight body, new flat-six engines with direct petrol injection, a completely revised chassis and evolutionary styling incorporating a fully-electric folding roof, the mid-engined Boxster offers open-top driving enthusiasts a new generation of the benchmark roadster.
The President of the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers, John Murdoch, said; “We would argue that Scottish roads are the best in the world for enjoying a rear-wheel drive roadster and the Boxster really delivers. Even when the road surface deteriorates, this is a wonderfully precise car which delivers the ultimate in driving satisfaction. Add in the attention to detail, build quality, impressive residuals and strong performance with improved fuel economy and it’s easy to see why the judging panel instantly warmed to this new model.”
Receiving the award, Chris Craft, Managing Director of Porsche Cars GB, commented; “Since going on sale in May, the reaction from customers and journalists to the new Boxster has been incredible. The Association of Scottish Motoring Writers drives a great many cars every year, and for the Boxster to receive this national recognition at tonight’s Awards is a further tribute to the outstanding achievement by our engineers and designers in Germany.”
The Porsche Boxster defines what an open-top sports car should be and core to its enduring appeal is the mid-engined layout that delivers renowned poise and balance combined with precise, agile handling.
Up to 35 kg lower weight, a 60 mm longer wheelbase, widened track on the front and rear axles, and larger wheels and tyres significantly enhance dynamic performance compared with its predecessor. While these attributes clearly result in the new Boxster offering a superior level of performance, they also help deliver – in combination with many other new features – up to 15 per cent greater fuel efficiency.
The Porsche Boxster is powered by a choice of charismatic flat-six engines with direct petrol injection. The Boxster 2.7-litre delivers 265 hp (195 kW), and the 3.4-litre fitted to the Boxster S delivers 315 hp (232 kW). Both models feature a manual six-speed gearbox as standard, with the seven-speed dual-clutch Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) available as an option.
The philosophy of Porsche Intelligent Performance makes the new car not only the fastest Boxster to date, but also its most efficient roadster yet. When fitted with the PDK transmission and Sport Chrono Package option, the 2.7-litre Boxster sprints from 0- 62 mph in 5.5 seconds, the Boxster S in just 4.8 seconds. Combined fuel consumption for the Boxster with PDK is 36.7 mpg, and emissions of 180 g/km CO2 place the model in Band I for Vehicle Excise Duty purposes. The Boxster S with PDK returns 35.3 mpg Combined (188 g/km CO2).
The Porsche Boxster is priced from £37,589, and from £45,384 for the Boxster S.
The Boxster features an Alcantara interior, 18” alloy wheels, Auto stop/start and Sports mode, remote control electric hood operation, audio CD with 7-inch colour touch-screen control, a universal audio interface offering MP3 connectivity and a three year warranty.
The Boxster S adds 19-inch alloy wheels, partial leather interior and Bi-Xenon headlights in addition to the power advantage of the larger 3.4-litre engine.
All new Boxster customers can also explore the potential of their car by participating in a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.
