SAE International to Host Symposium on Augmented/Virtual Reality Technologies

WARRENDALE, PA--Oct. 4, 2012: Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) software and hardware continue to grow and be utilized in all facets of design and manufacturing. Independently, they can both improve various aspects of design and manufacturing. But utilizing them together can play a significant role in getting product to market faster, safer and cheaper. Therefore it is a natural evolution to integrate these technologies together.

SAE International will host a new symposium -- the "SAE 2012 Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) Technologies Symposium" -- that focuses on the technical, economic and implementation aspects of AR and VR. This is the first event of its kind to showcase the collaboration of AR and VR for improved production and manufacturing.

The symposium will be held Nov. 13-14, 2012, at the Doubletree Hotel in Dearborn, Mich.

The event will explore moving AR and VR technologies from the lab to the production floor for improved manufacturing productivity. Attendees will learn about the challenges practitioners are facing today. In addition, the symposium will feature workshops focusing on head tracking, transitioning from a lab environment to production, CAD model geometry/configuration controls of geometry; and expert representation from all three industry sectors - automotive, aerospace and commercial vehicle.

Panel discussions will include:

  • "Economics of Visualization - How to Establish Sustained Business Value of Advanced Visualization Technologies in Manufacturing" - This presentation will discuss how visualization improves process performance in various manufacturing activities and define a product lifecycle view of applying visualization for improved decision making. The discussion also includes strategies and methods for technology investment cost justification.
  • "AR/VR Product Flow (Following the Digital Thread to the actual article) Product, Develop, Assembly Issues -Product PLM" -- In this panel discussion, representatives from Boeing, Caterpillar and Ford Motors will discuss the deployment of visualization technologies in their companies, how these technologies are integrated in the product development process, and the benefits they deliver.
