PORAC Voices Endorsement of Car Insurance Discount

SACRAMENTO, CA--Aug. 16, 2012: The Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC), representing more than 63,000 public safety members throughout California, announced today their support for Proposition 33, the 2012 Automobile Insurance Discount Act.

"Proposition 33 will encourage more drivers to get insured and stay insured by increasing access to affordable auto insurance," said PORAC President Lt. Ron Cottingham.  "Proposition 33 will make the roads safer by giving an incentive for people to follow the law. PORAC believes if your family is not safe, then nothing else matters."

In California, car insurance companies can offer a discount to drivers who have had continuous car insurance coverage, but unlike in most states, this discount belongs to the insurance companies.  Proposition 33 will change this to give ownership of the discount to the driver instead of the insurance company. Proposition 33 will allow consumers to shop their discount to an insurance carrier they choose. This will increase competition, lower rates and insure more Californians.

"PORAC members are on the front line of public safety throughout California," added Cottingham. "We see firsthand the devastation to families who do not have car insurance. We encourage everyone to support this important, common sense initiative."

Proposition 33 has received bipartisan support since being added to the November ballot. PORAC joins the California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, The Greenlining Institute and Democratic and Republican leaders including former Assembly Minority Leader Jim Brulte and Democratic Assembly Speaker Willie Brown.
