ITASCA, IL--June 21, 2012: The National Safety Council is accepting nominations for its 2012 Teen Driving Safety Leadership Award, supported by the General Motors Foundation. This award recognizes individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to reducing teen crashes and fatalities.

“We are proud to partner with the National Safety Council and recognize individuals and organizations dedicated to reducing teen car crashes”

"Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens, and the most dangerous year of a person's life is the year after receiving a driver's license," said Janet Froetscher, president and CEO of the National Safety Council. "Recipients of this award understand these dangers and are taking action to reverse this alarming trend."

Award winners will have clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of their programs or contributions, which may include the following efforts:

  • Advocacy in communities, states or nationwide
  • Leading efforts to adopt safe teen driving practices
  • Seeking teen driving legislation based on the principles of Graduated Driver Licensing
  • Raising public awareness of teen driving safety issues and prevention methods

"We are proud to partner with the National Safety Council and recognize individuals and organizations dedicated to reducing teen car crashes," said Mike Robinson, GM Foundation Board Member and GM Vice President, Sustainability and Global Regulatory Affairs. "More than 5,000 people die each year in crashes involving teen drivers, and it is people and organizations like these that help save lives."

Nominations for the Teen Driving Safety Leadership Award will be accepted through Aug. 6, 2012. To nominate an individual or organization, or for more information, fill out our nomination form or visit NSC Teen Award . Three winners will be chosen and will receive national recognition.
