Online Classes Help Seasoned Drivers Refresh Skills

minnesota

ST. PAUL, MN--June 7, 2012: Seasoned drivers aged 55 and older have seen a lot of changes to the driving environment over the years, and their options for refreshing their skills have changed, too, to include online classes that make them eligible for an insurance discount.

"Seasoned drivers typically are safe drivers," said Lisa Kons, coordinator of traffic education for the Minnesota Safety Council, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to preventing injuries. "But we all need to adapt to changes in the driving experience and to natural changes related to aging. Online training provides a convenient option."

By Minnesota law, people age 55 and older who complete a state-approved defensive driving course are eligible to receive a 10 percent, three-year discount on auto insurance.  The state approved online training for this purpose earlier in the year.

People aged 55 and older are among the fastest-growing segments of Internet users, Kons noted, and can complete online training at their own pace and in a relaxed home environment.

The Minnesota Safety Council offers initial 8-hour defensive driving training and 4-hour refresher courses, both online and in classroom settings. For more information, see Minnesota Safety Council or call 800-444-9150/651-291-9150.
