DETROIT: May 25, 2012: Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer and families across America start planning weekend getaways and summer road trips.

In fact, AAA predicts that more than 30 million Americans will be hitting the road for the long weekend.

With all of those extra cars on the road, traffic is inevitable, but there are tips travelers can take to get to their destination safer and faster. For example, you can save yourself a potential breakdown if you have your mechanic check your battery, tire pressure and fluid levels before embarking on your journey.

With gas prices soaring, you can also improve your fuel economy by keeping the windows rolled up and using the air-conditioning when driving on the highway. In addition, try packing all of your belongings inside the car instead of using a rooftop storage device. Any extra baggage on the outside will add unnecessary drag to your car and you'll wind up pumping in more fuel in the end.
