Daytona, Feb. 23, 2012: Tony Stewart won Gatorade Duel 1, with Dale Earnhardt Jr. running second. Robby Gordon and Michael McDowell transferred to the 500 field.

Danica Patrick experienced a "Welcome to NASCAR' moment when Jamie McMurray got into Aric Almirola, and the contact lead Almirola to get into Patrick. Although not well known for having a sense of humor, Patrick did deliver one of the best lines of the afternoon when she suggested that "...maybe the backup car will be faster."
