DAYTONA BEACH, November 13, 2011: Ending his racing season the way it began last March at Sebring International Raceway, Lee Davis – with more than a little help from teammate Ryan Eversley – swept both the sprint and endurance races Saturday at the HSR Daytona Historics to seal both the 2011 Cayman Interseries sprint and enduro championships.

Davis swept all three races in March’s opener at Sebring to get his season off to a great start and overcame more than one scare Saturday in a similar performance at Daytona International Speedway (DIS) to wrap up the dual Cayman Interseries titles. The endurance championship was the second in a row for Davis after first taking the title in 2010 while his first sprint-class crown avenges a close second-place finish in last year’s championship.

“It’s one thing to have a target on your back and be the one that everybody is going after, which we were fortunate enough to be this year, and it is another thing to chase people down,” Davis said. “I have had both now, and it is a different type of pressure, but it is great to come out on top. We do this for fun but we put a lot of work into it, a lot of hard work, and it’s really great when you put in the work and are able to pull out a couple of championships.”

Driving his black and red No. 33 Cayman S that carries the colors of the Advan Porsche 956s and 962s and Luna-C Clothing, Davis led every lap from the pole in the seven-lap morning sprint, but it was far from easy. He narrowly avoided a spinning Porsche that collected another competitor on the opening race lap and then managed to stay in front of Mark Sandridge in a one-lap, green-and-white-flag dash to the finish.

Sandridge, who drives his white and red-and-yellow striped No. 49 Cayman S that is modeled after his 1994 IMSA Champion Team Salad Porsche 911 RSR, also gave Davis his biggest challenge in the afternoon enduro. Davis and co-driver Eversley each had to pass Sandridge at various points in the one-hour race, including Eversley’s winning pass to lock down the race win and the championship title less than two laps from the finish.

“There’s not many people you can count on, and I can always count on Ryan,” said Davis (left in picture). “We have been racing together for several years now, we have developed a good coaching and co-driver relationship. I have total confidence in him.”

Eversley, who took over from starting-driver Davis just past the 30-minute mark, had to overcome a stop-and-go pit procedure penalty and a loose throttle pedal mount while chasing down Sandridge.

“It was kind of a tough day with the throttle pedal breaking but we wouldn’t have it any other way,” said Eversley (right in picture). “We don’t want it to be easy, but it is important to remember the Lee was dominating the race by himself anyway. I am privileged to get to work with Lee and drive this car and to represent the Luna-C name, the Children’s Tumor Foundation (CTF) and Napleton Porsche.”

Sandridge finished second in both Saturday races to cap a winning season in his return with Team Salad to racing competition with teammate and co-driver Joe Varde.

Bob Schneider and co-driver Chris Hall finished third in the enduro in Schneider’s white No. 40 Cayman S that runs in the colors of the legendary Martini “Baby” Porsche 935. Bill Riddell, in his No. 80 Cayman S that pays tribute to a David Piper Racing Porsche 917K, finished third overall in the morning sprint and took top sportsman division honors.

Other sportsman drivers to hit the podium Saturday included Ed Napleton, who finished second in the sprint, and Chuck Smithee, who finished first in class in the enduro and third in the sprint. Smithee drives his white No. 25 Mobil 1 Porsche GT-1 themed Cayman S and races alongside SpeedSport Tuning teammate Wayne Nykyforchyn, who drives a white and red No. 11 Cayman S in the colors of a Marlboro/Joest Racing Porsche 956. Nykyforchyn finished third in the sportsman division in the enduro.

The Cayman Interseries schedule at the Daytona Historics wraps up Sunday with a pair of non-points races, a morning sprint at 8:30 a.m. and a two-hour enduro that afternoon.
