LUTON, UNITED KINGDOM – Sept 19, 2011: Young offenders at HMYOI Aylesbury are gaining vital technical skills and qualifications thanks to a donation by Vauxhall Motors.
Three engines were given by Vauxhall to the Institution to be used as a valuable learning resource in the Motor Vehicle Workshop’s Engine Technology Unit. The engines will enable the young people to get hands-on experience of high-quality, modern engine technology and learn about significant improvement in environmental efficiency.
Two qualifications can thus be obtained at HMYOI Aylesbury:
The level 1 award is a six week course, giving learners a taster of the motor industry and provides a qualification that is aimed at the fast fit side of the industry.
The level 2 qualification is a more intense six-month course and provides the learner with the skills and knowledge to carry out servicing and repairs in a dealer or independent garage environment. It can be converted to a full NVQ or taken to a level 3 advanced VRQ.
Andy Pickett, Tutor at HMYOI Aylesbury, said: ‘’We are really grateful to Vauxhall Motors for their donation. I am confident we will soon be able to provide between 30 and 50 successful completions per year. What really motivates us is giving these young men a chance to turn their lives around by providing them with skills in an area of national skill shortage.’’
Cherie Denton, Community Relations Officer at Vauxhall Motors, said: "Vauxhall are very pleased to be able to provide young offenders with the opportunity to obtain vital skills and qualifications working on our engines. We hope that this will be of significant benefit to them in the workplace."
