Automotive Engineer Simon C. Tung Honored with SAE International's Edward N. Cole Award

WARRENDALE, PA, June 15, 2011: Simon C. Tung, a senior consultant at the Refining and Manufacturing Research Institute of CPC, was honored with SAE International's Edward N. Cole Award for Automotive Engineering Innovation during the SAE 2011 World Congress.
Established in 1978, this award recognizes an SAE International member whose innovative design is described in an SAE International paper or whose lifetime of accomplishment is judged to be a significant achievement in automotive engineering. The award honors the memory of Edward N. Cole, former President and Chief Operating Officer of General Motors Corporation, and the inspiration he provided to others in the engineering profession by his continuing search and drive for product innovation.
Dr. Tung has been involved in the automotive industry since joining General Motors Research Laboratories in 1982. While there, he led pioneering research and development on automotive powertrain tribology and surface engineering and was appointed a Technical Fellow in the General Motors R&D Center in 2003. In 2008, he joined the Industrial Technology Research Institute as General Director, where he was responsible to manage all R&D programs in the Energy and Environmental Research Laboratories. He made significant contribution in the research areas of green energy, energy storage system, hydrogen energy, biofuels, and greenhouse emission reduction. In addition, he has received 25 professional outstanding achievements awards in his career.
Dr. Tung's technical expertise includes energy technology, environmental engineering, surface engineering, and automotive systems. He has over 180 published works and holds more than 30 U.S. and international patents on novel methods for improving energy efficiency and environmental protection. He has received many distinguished honors, including being named an SAE Fellow and a Fellow in the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers as well as receiving the Gold Award from the Engineering Society of Detroit. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
