It's Prom Night Time: GEICO Reminds Teens and Parents: Please Don't Let Safe Driving Rules Go Out the Window

WASHINGTON--May 5, 2011: Prom night is the night that most of the rules go out the window. Teenagers are enjoying a rush of freedom and maybe parents are, too.

But despite the euphoria that permeates the air, safe driving rules may be more important on prom night than any other time of the year

Here are some reminders from GEICO for teens:

  • Cell phones are for emergency use only on the road.

If you have to use your phone, pull safely over to the side of the road first.

  • ALWAYS wear your safety belt.

(Girls: a safety belt couldn’t possibly outshine how beautiful you look. Boys: it’s a very handsome accessory.)

  • Limit your passengers.

The risk of fatal crashes increases with every additional passenger. Tonight is not the night to over crowd your car with tons of high-spirited friends.

  • Underage drinking and drug use is illegal.

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can cost you your license - or possibly your life.

  • Stay focused while driving.

Avoid distractions such as loud music, eating or interacting too much with friends. This is going to be a tough one, but do the best you can to keep your attention on the road.

And some GEICO reminders for parents:

  • Are your prom-goers traveling by limo?

If your teens are traveling by limo, choose a reputable limousine company.

And it’s very important to check if the limousine cars come equipped with safety belts. Remind your teens to use them.

  • It’s a good night to make use of a Parent-Teen driving contract.

GEICO offers one as do many organizations.

  • Be thoroughly familiar with your teen’s plans for the evening.

Make sure you know where all the pre-prom and post-prom events are being staged and how your teen is getting to them.

Prom night is memorable for everyone. It is one of the best memories a teenager can have. Make it one that is safe as well.
