SAN DIEGO, Oct. 7 -- Automobile accidents are the leading cause of death for 15 to 20-year-olds. Teenagers who are 16 years old have the highest crash rate than any other age group and are three times more likely to die in an accident than the average of all drivers. Statistics like these are the reason behind the high insurance rates for teens. However, there are some ways to keep costs down. AutomobileInsurance.net gives tips for families interested in saving money on their automobile insurance costs.

Teens can follow guidelines and qualify for discounts to keep automobile insurance premiums at a minimum, and will also help keep the driver safer. In some states, teen drivers are required to take certified driver's education courses to obtain their license at the age of 16; otherwise they will need to wait until they are age 18. These requirements allow the young driver to gain a solid foundation of good driving habits and can reduce teen automobile insurance rates by up to 15 percent. Although these certified classes are not required in all states, they are available and can be taken to reduce rates on a voluntary basis.

Most automobile insurance companies offer good grade discounts, which can reduce premiums up to 10 or 20 percent. Many companies require proof of a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. In addition to good grades, a young driver can keep their car insurance costs lower by maintaining a clean driving record. By avoiding speeding tickets, accidents and other violations, some companies will offer consistently lower premiums and deductibles each year the young driver has remained safe from accidents and traffic violations.

There are some laws in place, which vary from state to state, to keep teen drivers safe. These include mandatory certified driver's education classes, limited time behind the wheel at night, and a required amount of driving with adult supervision. Parents can also place rules on teen drivers to keep them safe. Studies have shown that distracted driving often contributes to accidents by young drivers. These rules can include items such as not using cell phones or not listening to music while driving, as well as establishing a curfew to keep teens off roads during high-risk times, such as nights and weekend evenings.
