Chase Elliott won the inaugural George Elliott Memorial 100 Saturday
night, but Bubba Pollard and David Murphy captured season championships
at Gresham Motorsports Park.
Elliott won the event honoring his grandfather with Pollard right on
his back bumper. The runner-up effort was enough to give Pollard the
first-ever GMP Super Late Model season championship. Pollard scored 590
points in four SLM events in GMP's inaugural season of racing to take
the crown over Jimmy Garmon. Pollard took the Championship with three
second- and one third-place finishes.
Elliott's win earned him a guaranteed spot in the 27th-Annual World
Crown 300 super late model race November 14. Earlier this season,
Elliott also gained an automatic starting spot for the Pro Late Model
portion of this year's 'Crown' with a win at GMP on April 17.
The race also had special meaning for Chase’s dad Bill Elliott, who
once worked at the track selling hot dogs and tickets, annd came back
years later to score his first major stock car victory in the
mid-1970s.
“It was a special evening for me because Daddy’s sister Ethel and his
first cousin Thelma were able to come for the inaugural race and they
were able to see Chase race and win for the first time,” Bill Elliott
said.
Elliott’s next event will be the Blizzard Series championship finale
Friday night at Five Flags Speedway, in Pensacola.
Next up at Gresham Motorsports Park will be our biggest family event
of the 2010 season - McDonald's Night With Ronald McDonald on Saturday,
October 9. It will be a full night of fun both on and off the track
with the Pro Late Models, Renegade Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, and
Trucks battling it out on a Double Points Night to determine the season
champions.

weekend for their $25,000 race before going to EAMS on Sunday and
attempt to tag the rear of the $7,000 AL STATE RACE. He told me how

SHOOTOUT. www.jonathandavenport.net

Super Late Model driver TJ Reaid, of Acworth, heads into this
weekend's Sunoco Gulf Coast Championship Series events very optimistic
about a great showing for Kyle Busch Motorsports. "We had two top five
finishes in the series back in August and we are looking for a win or
two this weekend," said Reaid. "We also had a great run going at
Winchester Speedway in the CRA race on Labor Day weekend when we
developed an engine problem with 7 laps to go."
Reaid will be driving the Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota Friday night
at Five Flags Speedway and Saturday night at Mobile International
Speedway. "I expect the car count will be up this weekend so the
competition should be intense," added Reaid.

consistent and holds a 29-point lead over Augie Grill, who has won each

Panhandle Motorsports, the family team that has fielded cars for
Johanna Long in recent seasons in the Late Model scene of the

Long will be making her fourth career NCWTS start, but first for her
family team in the series after having competed for Billy Ballew
Motorsports in her first three starts earlier this year. Because of
this, Long will not be competing in the Rubber & Specialties 100 finale
for the Blizzard Series at her home track, Five Flags Speedway (FL), on
Friday. http://www.speed51.com

Tony Knowles continued his stranglehold of Dixie Speedway Saturday

My favorite racing writer, Dave Argabright, writes in NSSN 9/8/10
about youngsters racing on big tracks in big cars. A 13-year-old died
at the Indy MotoGP, after being run over by a 12-year-old. Argabright
says "the time has come to keep them off the big tracks."

A new "World Record" for a 3/8's mile track was set Saturday night in
the "Call of the Wild" event at Kalamazoo (MI) Speedway by Andy Bozell.
He turned a lap of 10.038 seconds which broke Curt Spalding's previous
world record of 10.217 set at the event last year.

At Saturday night's ASA Late Model North race at Berlin Raceway (MI),
each driver in the field was given a letter from the track stating that
their prize monies for the event would be guaranteed to them by track
owner Mike Blackmer. Citing “many problems and economic hardships
facing the ASA Series”, the track paid drivers directly either at the
track or by mail.
ASA Late Model Series owner Ron Varney issued a letter to teams on
Tuesday morning. In the letter, Varney claimed that in his eight years
as a promoter that no driver or team of his has gone unpaid. He also
told teams that purse checks were being processed and issued this week.
Varney admitted that the tough economy has been a problem this year,
but that the series was working through it. Copies of the letters:

The NASCAR Drive for Diversity (D4D) program for 2011 and Revolution

Shannon Babb outdueled the red-hot Billy Moyer in a classic battle to
capture Saturday night’s 28th annual World of Outlaws Late Model Series
Pepsi Nationals at Pevely, MO. The two-time DIRTcar Summer Nationals
champion earned $10,000 for his 10th career victory on the WoO LMS
Clint Smith, of Senoia, Ga., advanced from the 11th starting spot to
place fifth, registering his fourth top-five run in the last five WoO
LMS events. Shane Clanton was 15th.
Clint Smith and Tim Fuller – good friends and WoO LMS traveling
partners – were teammates at I-55 Raceway. With Fuller looking for a
way to avoid hauling his Gypsum Express equipment 17 hours one-way from
his shop in Edwards, N.Y., to Pevely, Mo., for a single race, Smith
agreed to put Fuller in his backup car for the event. Fuller flew from
Syracuse, N.Y., to St. Louis on Saturday morning and met up with Smith,
whose trip to I-55 from Senoia, Ga., was just under 10 hours. Fuller
struggled with an incorrect tire choice and finished 13th.

The Lucas Oil Late Model Series has placed drivers Dan Schlieper and
Jeff Watson on probation for the next five races in response to an
altercation at Bluegrass Speedway in Bardstown, Kentucky. The drivers
were involved in an on-track incident in which Schlieper's car was
severely damaged. After the race was completed, a fight broke out
involving both drivers and members of their respective crews, as well
as other individuals, apparently not associated with either team.

14 Year Old, “Lil Wil” Herrington Won 1st Time Ever Late Model Feature
at Cochran Motor Speedway
By: Arlene Pittman
Every boys dream is to race something. Rather it is bikes,
4-wheelers to cars. “Lil Will” Herrington had that chance and brought
home the big time trophy this past Saturday night at Cochran Motor
Speedway. With one of the largest crowds this year at Cochran Motor
Speedway, it brought everybody to their feet with this very popular
win.
Herrington qualified 3rd, allowing him to start 2nd row inside of a
full field of super fast dirt late models. The field was filled with
veteran top quality drivers. On front row was Keith Edge along with
Dennis McDaniel. Herrington in his Rookie year also knew he had a
storm behind with drivers like Mitch Fulford, Eric Register, Philip
Pittman, along with many more. Herrington drove hard to make the pass
for the lead on lap 5. With numerous cautions, Herrington kept his
cool in the cockpit of his Warrior dirt late model. Going through his
mind, “can this be true, is this really happening”, hearing every
little nut and bolt on his car wishing for the white flag lap. The
closer to the end the more the track dry slicked over. Driving as hard
as he could to keep the lead, he knew he had to be smooth with the
surface turning to dry slick the closer he was to the checkered flag.
With a perfect set-up from his team, he was able to drive every lap
like one of those veterans chasing him for the lead.
“Lil Wil” was raised in Cochran, by Glen and Pam Herrington. Wil
comes from a racing family with his father Glen racing everything from
bomber to dirt late models for teams that were proud to have him. Glen
had always been a very competive driver and continues to be so. The
day came though when son said he wanted to drive. Mother, Pam,
informed Glen this was going to happen. Now every Saturday night there
is “Lil Wil” driving his 2004 Warrior with father crew chiefing.
“Lil Wil” started racing at age 12 with his first feature win after
only 6 races. Wil went on to win 8 more races and the 2009 Georgia
State Championship. He also finished 3rd at East Alabama Motor Speedway
National 100 in the cruiser division of that same year. In 2010, at the
age of 13, he started racing his 2004 Warrior dirt late model and has
had several top 4 finishes and one win.
Herrington is proud to have Herrington Automotive for his primary
sponsor and Last Air & Electrical, Up & Rolling Tire Center, and MGM
Industrial Contractors on board for secondary sponsors. As all other
teams, money is hard to come by and he realizes what it takes to make
this happen each Saturday night.
For more information on “Lil Wil” please give his mom Pam
Herrington a call at (478) 230-7326.
