Kimmel
Claims 12th Top-10 of Season at Salem Speedway
Races to a Ninth-Place Finish
Under the Lights
SALEM, Ind. (September 20, 2010)- Frank Kimmel ended a busy day
at Salem Speedway with a top-10 finish in the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers ARCA
Fall Classic 200, earning his 12th top-10 finish of the 2010 season.. Kimmel, the
hometown favorite, came to his
home track with high hopes but battled the handling on his Ansell/Menards Ford
Fusion en-route to a ninth-place finish.
The Ansell/Menards
team brought the hometown crowd to their feet after setting the fastest time during
Saturday afternoon's lone practice session. Kimmel circled the half-mile Salem Speedway
in 17.443 seconds (114.545
mph), nearly one-tenth faster than the rest of the 33 car field.
Looking to
backup his practice time, Kimmel set to the track during qualifying later in
the afternoon. As the 32ndcar to take the track, the nine-time ARCA Racing Series
champion knew exactly
what he needed to do. Kimmel paced the
high-banked oval in a time of 17.319 seconds (115.364 mph), picking up more
than one-tenth of a second from his practice time. The time was good enough to earn
a fourth-place
start for the drop of the green flag.
The green
flag dropped signaling the start of 200 laps of short-track competition shortly
after 7:00 p.m. EST. As the race got
under way, Kimmel settled into the sixth position for the first 50 lap green-flag
run. The yellow flag came out on lap 50 signaling the first caution of the
night. During the caution Kimmel radioed
to his Ansell/Menards team that the car was "bouncing really hard on the track,
sometimes causing the brake pedal to go to the floor."
Crew Chief
Bill Kimmel Jr. took the opportunity to bring his driver down pit road on lap
53 for adjustments. The Ansell/Menards
crew went to work on their Ford Fusion changing two tires, making a track bar
adjustment and adding Fuel. After a
quick stop Kimmel returned to the track in seventh position.
It took
only one lap for Kimmel to motor his No. 44 machine back into the top-five
after the lap 57 restart. Kimmel rode in
the top-five for the next 43 laps, but was still fighting the handling of his
car.
When the
caution flag came out for a wreck on lap 105, Kimmel Jr called his driver down
pit road for adjustments. Kimmel brought
his Ansell/Menards machine in on lap 108, and the crew quickly went under the hood
to make a shock adjustment, looking to help control the bouncing of their Ford
Fusion.
The long
stop relegated Kimmel to the 10thposition for the lap 112
restart. With the leaders in fresh tires
Kimmel did all he could to hold on to his Ford during the next 12-lap run. Luckily
the yellow flag came out on lap 125
allowing Kimmel to bring his Ansell/Menards Ford back down pit road on lap 128
for four tires and fuel.
The green
flag came back out restarting the field on lap 129, and Kimmel had some work to
do as the last car on the lead lap in 11th position. It only took 15 laps for Kimmel
to work
through the field, climbing to the sixth position on lap 153. For the next 30 laps
Kimmel staged a great four-car
battle for fourth place with the No. 25 of Mikey Kile, Patrick Sheltra's No. 60
and the No. 32 of Justin Marks.
Unfortunately
on lap 183 the handling of the Ansell/Menards Ford Fusion went south forcing
Kimmel to hold on for the remaining 17 laps of the race. When the checkered flag
flew on lap 200,
Kimmel brought his Ford Fusion across the finish line in ninth place.
The finish
allowed the Ansell/Menards team to hold on to their fourth position in the
championship standings with only two races remaining on the schedule.
The ARCA
Racing Series will take a much needed weekend off before heading to Kansas
Speedway on Thursday, September 30thfor the ARCA Kansas Lottery
150. The green flag will drop at 4:00
p.m. CDT with LIVE race coverage on SPEED. ARCARacing.com will feature live audio
coverage and timing and scoring.
