MCCLENATHAN SNARES PROVISIONAL CONCORD POLE
CONCORD, N.C. (Sept. 17, 2010) - Cory McClenathan, racing the Valvoline/FRAM
Top Fuel dragster, snared the provisional pole position Friday night for the
third annual NHRA Carolinas Nationals, posting a 3.831-second pass at a
track-record speed of 321.12 mph.
If it holds through two more qualifying rounds on Saturday, he will have
earned his fifth No. 1 of the season and the 38th of his career.
"Larry (Dixon, No. 1 in points) and I both didn't get in in the first run,"
said McClenathan (second in points), who clocked a 4.841/149.40 in the
opening session. "Once we saw Tony run the 3.86 earlier today we were a
little over-zealous, so we backed it up (for the second run) and took the
Valolvine car back out there and said, Let's just go A to B, let's not be
crazy.
"(Crew chiefs) Phil (Shuler) and Todd (Okuhara) are just complete
opposites," added McClenathan, who has won the last two events here at zMax
Dragway. You have Phil who is used to just wanting to throw the whole
trailer at it, and Todd is just very well thought out. So I think we did
about half of what Phil really wanted to do out there. It just shows what a
good mix they are as far as co-crew chiefs go.
"It ran 321 mph. Big speed. It was on the rev limiter down there because it
would have run a lot faster than that. I could feel it out there. That's a
good run. The track just got really good after it started getting cooler out
there, but have I told you how much I love zMax Dragway here lately? Seems
to go with our flow of things.²
