Emisstar and Capacity of Texas Announce Successful Completion of the World’s First Pluggable Hybrid Terminal Tractor (PHETT) Project

BAYPORT, N.Y.--Emisstar LLC and Capacity of Texas, Inc. announced today the successful completion of Capacity’s New Technology Research and Development (NTRD) grant from the State of Texas for the development of a functional prototype Pluggable Hybrid Electric Terminal Tractor (PHETT). The grant was completed by Capacity of Texas, in partnership with Alternative Motive Power Systems, LLC of Alexandria, Ohio, and Emisstar LLC.

“Rigorous in-use PEMS testing has validated the performance and promise of the PHETT, a sustainable transportation solution for port, rail and drayage applications worldwide”

The project was funded by the State of Texas through a grant from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality’s NTRD Program. Capacity developed a modular hybrid electric terminal tractor capable of operating in either a generator set “charge-sustaining?? hybrid mode or in a “zero-emissions?? mode using grid-supplied power. The final PEMS report released by Emisstar and Capacity marks the successful completion of the grant and project for the TCEQ. Copies of the report are available for download at: http://www.emisstar.com.

Emisstar performed on-board emission testing and prototype vehicle performance validation at the Port of Houston to quantify the impressive fuel economy improvements and emission reductions of the PHETT under real world cargo offloading conditions. Emisstar’s testing documented fuel economy improvement of 47 percent, on average, compared to traditional diesel-powered terminal tractors, and significant duty-cycle specific reductions in the total mass emissions of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides.

“Rigorous in-use PEMS testing has validated the performance and promise of the PHETT, a sustainable transportation solution for port, rail and drayage applications worldwide,?? stated Emisstar Principal Glenn P. Goldstein. “Capacity of Texas is to be commended for their efforts in developing this industry-leading technology, which will play an important role in taking the U.S. one step closer to energy independence.??

Capacity of Texas developed the PHETT’s propulsion system with AMPS, a critical components supplier whose proprietary control and power management systems make them an industry leader in green motive power. Additionally, Capacity’s patent-pending hydraulic and pneumatic power systems for the PHETT are uniquely powered by a single, dual-shaft variable speed motor.

Phillip Ford, President of Capacity of Texas, noted, “As a leader in the terminal tractor industry, we are pleased to receive the grant from the state of Texas to develop a Pluggable Hybrid Electric Terminal Tractor. The valuable testing completed by Emisstar was an important validation of our PHETT technology under real-world operating conditions at the POH. The development of this fully commercialized product will reduce emissions at all ports, intermodal yards and warehousing/distribution centers not only in North America but also throughout the world. Capacity of Texas is dedicated to environmental stewardship by improving our product with the latest technology in electronic controls, ultra-clean combustion engines and overall green propulsion. We want to thank Emisstar, AMPS and the TCEQ as important partners in achieving those goals.??
