 Starting Ninth at “The Big Go�??, Anderson Targets a Monday Turnaround
 
Event:  56th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals

A cursory glance at the qualifying results from this weekend’s Mac Tools U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, IN will show that Pro Stock standout Greg Anderson qualified his Summit Racing Pontiac in the ninth position for Monday’s final eliminations based on a 6.602-second, 209.62 mph pass made in Sunday’s early qualifying session.  A further investigation will reveal that in two of the five sessions at O’Reilly Raceway Park, Anderson was among the five quickest cars in the tightly packed Pro Stock field.
 
What is not immediately evident is that the five-time Indianapolis winner’s effort included two shut-off runs and that he was far from pleased with his race car’s performance.  However, as the biggest event of the Full Throttle season and the first stop in the NHRA’s championship playoff, this uncharacteristic showing only served to motivate Anderson even further, as he and the KB Racing team began a detailed analysis of the data from their qualifying runs, looking to find a way to return their race car to its winning ways by tomorrow. 
                              
“This may have been the toughest qualifying performance I’ve ever had at the U.S. Nationals,�?? said Anderson.  “We came into the weekend thinking we had a great Summit Racing Pontiac, but unfortunately, we have yet to make what I would consider a representative run.  We were forced to shut off on two attempts and swung between being too soft and blowing the tires off in the runs we did complete.  That certainly was not what we were expecting to do.
 
“However, we’re not about to worry about what has already happened.  It’s time to get to work.  We have an extremely tough Pro Stock field to deal with tomorrow, and if that wasn’t enough, we’re going into the first round without lane choice on a very challenging racetrack.  We may not have the answers right now, but by the time we pull to the starting line, we need to know what this car needs to get down either lane.  After all, this is the U.S. Nationals, which is the one race that matters the most to me, and one way or another, we’ll do whatever it takes to get the job done.�??
