Points Championships Handed Out in Mods
Saturday September 4, 2010
By: Rodney Rescott

West Lebanon, NY: The Valley of Speed was set to wrap up the 2010 Title Season with a night of exciting racing and close points races. In the Big Block Modifieds, Brett Hearn held a slim 16 point advantage over Mr. DIRT title holder J.R. Heffner, and Hearn still hadn’t visited victory lane.

With 30 laps posted on the Kokosa Oil Lap Counter, it was time to get down to business. At the drop of the green, they made it as far as turn 2 before the caution flew slowing the field. This caused a bit of confusion as technology issues that plagued the public address system, finally got a hold of the one way driver radios.

After a brief red flag to try and fix the system, the cars were lined up again according to the original starting order, and back to racing they went. Out front was the #87X of Paul Gilardi with J.C. Flach right in his tire tracks.

Caution flew again for the Neil Stratton on lap 8, bunching the field once again. Gilardi still held court out front as Andy Bachetti darted from 4th to 2nd by lap 9. Flach’s car fading allowing Hearn to scurry his way into 3rd by lap 12 when the caution flew for the #60 of Brian Berger who suffered a flat right rear.

On the restart, Hearn was in 2nd and began to dog Bachetti for the top spot. Caution flew again as contact between the #77F of Mark Flach and the King Fish, Mike King sent the #77F hard into the outside wall in turn 1.

Back under green, Hearn tried to inside and outside to try and get his first win of 2010. But Bachetti was on fire, and charged out to a commanding lead. Caution flew again on lap 18 for the slowing #55K of King. Under caution, contact between the #57 of Donnie Corellis and the #42P of Matt Pupello, relegating the #42P to the rear for aggressive driving under caution.

Back under green, Bachetti charged out again with Hearn in tow. That was as close as the #20H was gonna get, as Andy Bachetti captured the season ending win. Hearn crossed the line 2nd followed by Eddie Marshall, J.R. Heffner, and Donnie Corellis to round out the top 5 finishers.

With Hearn’s 2nd place finish, he clinched the 2010 Modified Track Championship over Heffner. The final points standings will be made official and posted on our website at www.LebanonValley.com within the next few days.

The 358 Super Series made there way on to the speedway for their 24 Lap feature event to crown their point champion as well. Andy Bachetti held a very slim 2 point advantage over Hearn and 8 points over 3rd place Wayne Jelley.

At the green, Kyle Hoffman powered out to the early lead in front of the #34H of Steve Hough. The #16H of Hoffman held court for the first dozen or so laps until the first caution slowed the field on lap 13. Hoffman shot out again, but this time Hearn was hot on his heels trying to stay ahead of Bachetti.

And by lap 21, Hearn passed Hoffman and charged away from the field. Caution flew again bunching up the field on lap 22. But that was not going to keep Hearn from victory
lane. Hoffman had to settle for 2nd followed by Bachetti, Matt Quinn, and Wayne Jelley.

With Bachetti only able to muster a 3rd place finish, that handed the 2010 358 Modified Point Championship to Hearn.

In the LV Sportsman division, their 20 lap feature event was fairly uneventful as the #89 of Don Kennedy shot out to the early lead with the #88 of Olden Dwyer in his tire tracks. Caution flew on lap 2, bunching the field and allowing the #36 of Steve Meilleur and the #55 of Brett Haas to get a shot at Kennedy. On the restart, Kennedy took off again, but by the time they got back around to the front stretch, Haas had taken over the lead. De ja vu kicked in and by the time they came around again, it was the #36 of Meilleur out front on lap 4.

The #36 held strong out front until late in the race, the handle began to fade, and Haas pounced at the chance for his first win of 2010. On lap 16 Haas forced his to the front, and began to pull away. Caution flew again on lap 18 for the #22 of Jeff Watson that bunched the field again.

But nobody had anything for Haas in the closing laps as the #55 scored his first win of 2010. Meilleur had to settle for 2nd, Kyle Armstrong, Colby Schroder and Kyle Hoffman rounded out the top 5. The final points showdown comes in two for the LV and Budget Sportsman on the last night of racing at the Valley of Speed for 2010.

The Pro Stocks had a special 25 lap Echo Series event that closed out the mini series throughout the year. Out front early was the #7 of Rob Yetman with the #17 of Nick Hilt and the #10 of Cale Kneer. Caution flew on lap 4 as the #324 of Jay Casey slowed with mechanical issues. Yetman charged back out front again on the restart.

Caution flew twice more for spinning cars on the restarts. Cautions flew again several more times, but that didn’t keep Yetman from capturing the win. Cale Kneer held on for 2nd followed by Nick Hilt, Victor Hopkins and Chad Jesseo to round out the top 5.

The Pro Stocks will officially close out the 2010 Points Championship next week with the DIRT Pro Stock Series Liberty 30. Jay Corbin has a commanding lead on the current points standings and only has to start next week to lock down his first point championship.

In the Pure Stocks, Ron Johnson scored the win in Pure Stock #1, Terry McNamara took Pure Stock #2, while Lou Ganzcar lead wire to wire to take Pure Stock #3.

As mentioned above, next Saturday Night at the Valley of Speed will be Remember Our Heroes night with free admission for all Emergency Personnel and members of our Armed Forces! The Pro Stock Liberty 30 Pro Stock Tour race along with the 7th Annual Boomer’s Performance 20 Lap Pure Stock Classic. Sportsman, Budget Sportsman and the 4 cylinders will all be in action.
